Description

Now with MFi controller support!

Retroid is a space arcade game built with lo-res voxels. Please enjoy the five levels of stylish blocky action!

Although is is an arcade game, it has the unusual feature that at any time you can pinch, zoom, rotate the 3D camera to see the action from any angle. There's a button to zoom out to orthogonal 2D view, too, if you are feeling nostalgic.

This game also supports a certain arcade cabinet peripheral that shall not be iNamed.

The levels and characters for Retroid were built with the block-construction app "Voxel."

Good Concept

A lot of potential if the developer can put time and resource into it.

Produced by morons

It looks nice. 3D blocks in primary colours; chunky, colourful, a sort of primal, building block representation. Everything else is truly awful.

The controls! Fingers and thumbs, clumsy and off putting, like picking up needles whilst wearing boxing gloves. One of the key skills in this fetid game is adjusting the height of one's 3D ship to the height of the enemy. It's impossible to tell which 'layer' one's ship is on; what's my altitude? All the depth perception problems of isometry made worse by the clunky control scheme.

And the goals? The levels are quite inventive but I quit on the fifth. The fourth involves a static target that encourages the player to find a static position from which to shoot. From this position, sometimes the enemy shoots the player, and other times it doesn't. Devs, what is the expected player strategy here? Your controls don't encourage constant movement to confuse enemy targeting. The only sensible option is persistence. Stay still and hope for the best. Once the target is destroyed, the play must fly into a cave without any sense of altitude or relative position. Hit a wall and die. There's no challenge, just irritation.

This is hateful and incompetent, which is a shame considering the pleasing look of the game. Guys, get a designer, you're no good at making games.
