Editors’ Notes

We know we should spend more time reading, but sometimes we need a little push to start turning those pages. Bookout’s cheerful achievements and easy stat-tracking encourage us to turn off the TV and curl up with a great novel. We get a real sense of satisfaction from hitting our monthly reading goals, not to mention whittling down that dusty pile of books on our nightstand.

Best reading app

I’ve used this app for about three years now and swear by it for tracking reading (even just knowing the page you’re on) as well as motivating you to consistently read daily and increase your reading speed and time. I have the prime membership and have read about 150 books on the app, which records all the detail including when you finished it and your quotes and each reading session. I photograph key pages which means I feel better then giving away the book, knowing I can look back at the quote later. My reading has definitely increased and I achieved a 245 day reading streak last year.

I love the functionality but have a few niggles. The daily reminder to read still pops up even if you have the app currently open and the timer for a reading session on. I’ve also entered a generic ‘magazines and newspapers’ book in so I can clock that time as reading. The new ‘levels’ function would be fun apart from that I can’t work out any rhyme or reason as to why after 37, 58 or 71 more hours reading I would move up a level. It always seems like a very random number. But these are really minor and I love using the app daily!

not worth it

i have been back and forth and back again about this app. i’ve used it for two or three years, and had a year long Pro subscription. the fact of the matter is this app is pretty garbage for its free users, and honestly middling for those who pay. the only reason i keep it on my phone is because it’s very helpful for telling me how long it’ll take me to finish a book, which is essential for library loans, books i want to finish before the end of the month, etc. the completion estimations and timer are brilliant (when they work). aside from that though, the app is low quality, so many features are being increasingly paywalled, and it’s rife with bugs. there is a bug with tagging collections which i flagged to the dev team back in AUGUST 2022, which they responded they were “working on”, which is still an issue for me now in MAY 2024. now there is an new bug with the app’s core feature, the actual reading timer, where the timer just stops counting randomly if your phone locks, basically rendering the app useless. and if the timer doesn’t work, by knock on effect the app also won’t be able to accurately tell you when you’ll finish the book. i’ve been told that they are “working on a fix”, but goodness knows how long that’s gonna take.

if you are really into stats and tracking like i am, there are far better apps out there - Storygraph is a good start. if you need the timer function, use this app (with caution), but i wouldn’t spend a penny.

Developer Response ,

Hello,
Thank you so much for your honest review. All books can be edited and changed, so you do not need to delete a book in order to fix an error or change it to another book. When you read using the timer, you earn diamonds, with them you can unlock new free books thus as long as you keep reading using Bookly, you will be able to read as many books as you want. We are working hard to make the app better and we will do better in communicating all the things you can achieve with the free version of Bookly.
