Description

Sure, it's "just" a dictionary app...

As a reader, you can use it like you would normally use a dictionary, to look up specialized or unusual words, and you'll get what you expect: a concise definition to get you back to reading.

But... here's the great part. As a writer, you can also use it to look up words you already know. Or think you do! And you should, because this is Mr. Webster's actual and original dictionary. The real deal.

The magic is in the definitions for commonplace words. Just take a look at the screenshots! This is good stuff. It will delight and amuse. It may even kindle your imagination.

The author's personality shines through in colorful prose that's packed with classic examples of usage.

And!

Remember paging through a big hardcover dictionary looking for a word only to get sidetracked exploring other words you'd stumble across?

Oh-hoh! If I may bend your ear a moment longer...

The usual way to do search is to show only results that match what has been typed so far. And normally that's perfect: don't show you anything you don't need to see, right?

But if I did it that way, how can you get sidetracked?

So I went a different direction. All of the words are in a giant list. You can scroll it or jump to a letter. And as you search, it scrolls to the first match. It's fast and you can find what you want quickly, but it still leaves room for serendipity.

Get it and get writing!

Good simple interface

I love the Dictionary app that comes with MacOS and always wanted a similar simple app for iOS.

I understand that the content of this app comes from 1913 version of Webster's dictionary, so obviously there will be some entries that are culturally, or scientifically outdated by 100 years, so use that as a commonsense filter for what words your looking up.

For me, a couple things preventing 5 star rating:

- on iPhone 7 form factor, some headings for long words go over the edge of the page instead of hyphenating
- I wish that in definition pages words were linked so you could directly jump to a new page rather than searching.

For lovers of words, it's NOT a classroom reference

Very unique, a beautiful execution. This is a 'dictionary' in a basic sense, or rather classic or older way. For those who enjoy the rich potential of the English lexicon and wish to grow in it. And avoid ridiculous modern additions. It's a delight for wordsmiths, real or aspiring. And for readers. If you like to read dictionaries you'll love this!, there are full sentences and only minor blurs of tech info. You get a fuller knowledge of a word through reading and examples - not by reading a list of short single phrases separated by numbers and codes.

I hope it is maintained! It's quite a great piece of work. Thank you to the dev.

A lovely writer's dictionary. A true friend.

Provides not only a literal definition, but a contextual one along with connotations associated with the word in history. For example, looking up a simple definition of the word "fire" in a regular dictionary would yield:

The phenomenon of combustion manifested in light, flame, and heat.

Of course a regular dictionary would also provide other definitions such as burning passion, liveliness of imagination, and firearms.

This dictionary, on the other hand, will provide the same definitions, among many others with notes such as:

Anciently, fire, air, earth, and water were regarded as the four elements of which all things are composed.

Splendor; brilliancy; luster; hence, a star.

Intellectual and moral enthusiasm; capacity for ardor and zeal.

A lovely, reliable, pocket writer's dictionary. A true companion, a gem. It's nice to have a friend.
