Description
NOTE:
The App is just for iPhone with flashlight. It doe NOT work on iPad, iPod touch or any iOS device without flashlight.
Description:
Using this App, you can control the flashing on/off speed of your phone flashlight between 1Hz to 130Hz. In another word, this App makes your iPhone into a strobe light.
What's the Application then?!
You can use this App to use your iPhone as a tachometer that measures the speed of any rotating object.
How to use it?
Suppose you have a fan and need to measure its speed (RPM). Turn on the fan in a DARK environment, launch the App on your iPhone (that has flashlight). Manually tune the speed using the main slider of the App to see the rotating object looks almost not moving. Then, start fine tuning using the three buttons in the App to get the exact speed. At this point the rotating object looks like stationary! But, it is moving! So, never touch the moving/rotating object during your test!
Features:
- Slider to adjust strobe light speed between 1-130Hz (60-7800RPM)
- x2 and ÷2 buttons for quick adjustment of flashing speed
- 3 Buttons for fine tuning of the speed up to 2 decimal: 0X.00, 00.X0, 00.0X
- Textfield to manually enter the speed in RPM (tap on the speed label)
- Button for light and dark background option
- showing the speed in both Hz and RPM
- simple and easy to use!!
What’s New
Version 1.1
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.
- Added quick RPM adjustment of x2 and ÷2
- Changed manual input to RPM
Ratings and Reviews
Accurate but not continuously
I used this to speed check a turntable. Basically a decent and helpful app and when it produced a steady blinking flash it appeared to be accurate. However, every 2 or 3 seconds the light would go off completely for a second or two then get back up to speed and then the whole process would repeat ad infinitum.
Setting the flash rate was easy, however it would be helpful to set by Hz as well as RPM.
(iPhone was 6s)
Very precise, good so far
I really like this app. Used it for an educational experience with my son when he saw a video of a helicopter flying with the blades not moving (synced to camera's frame rate). Showed him how the synced strobe only illuminates the blades on our ceiling fan in one position in the same way the synced frame rate only captured the helicopter blades in one position. I then used the app at work to diagnose a bad computer fan that was only spinning at a 1/5th of its rated speed, causing the computer to overheat.
Works well
I used this app to verify the Rams of my record player. I tried to use it to stop the 90 markings on the edge of the turn table, but at that high frequency the flashes were not short enough.. Using just a single marking on the turn table, using a 100 rpm setting (3 x 33 1/3 rpm) showed that the speed was accurate. The minimum flash rate is 60 rpm, that is why I used the higher rate.
I also measured the speed of my ceiling fan at 88 rpm.
I like the app very much.
