Ratings and Reviews
Chinese Malware
Do not install! My experience aligns with Tylus0’s review. The app will not work unless the app has permission to see other devices on the WiFi network. And don’t think you’ll get around it by using a mobile hotspot. The app wants free reign of your WiFi network and the devices on it. Ask yourself, why isn’t the communication between the associated hardware and the mobile device using a Bluetooth standard? If it is using a Bluetooth standard, why does the app need to see other devices on the WiFi network? Those are rhetorical questions, of course. Tylus0’s conclusion after seeing his connection monitors go “crazy” after enabling WiFi abilities was that this is delivering Chinese malware, and I have come to the same conclusion
This is a safe app. No data mining.
The ear video otoscope contains a WiFi transceiver. It broadcasts an SSID of Soulear-xxxx which you join your phone to. You don’t have to go any further than that. The Soulear WiFi mini network now just contains the otoscope and your phone. That’s it; no other devices. This little network can’t even connect to the Internet and you can see that in your phone’s Settings app. It transfers video on this tiny network between the app and the otoscope. You can save pictures locally through the app if you want.
There is no nefarious activity to be seen here. Stand down from Red Alert. It is a simple, reasonably conceived app which performs its function well during my use.
Privacy issues
This app is sneaky. It does what it promises to, but it will steal your data. For example when you connect to the ear device it will ask for access to your camera making you think it’s the ear device when it’s in fact your phone camera. Who know what they’re doing with that data. Also as other reviews mentioned it probably mines data through your wifi/cellular network considering the app refuses to work when you turn off those permissions. It’s no wonder the device itself is only $6 if it takes all this data.
