A Hidden Gem

So I’m pretty picky about interactive story apps and have downloaded over a dozen. I was hunting for an app that had edgier story lines and saw this recommended in the App Store. I’ve found what I was looking for. Irish Mafia? Stalked by a Serial Killer? Time Travel to ancient Egypt? A mind-melding story about being stuck in a mysterious mansion with a bunch of strangers? A sexy vampire estate full of games of intrigue and deception? Sign me up!

The app is newish, so at the date of this review, there are 5 ongoing stories. This small number still offers something for everyone. I have loved every single story I have read so far. The stories are unique and so engaging they are hard to walk away from. Like with other apps, you will make decisions that affect your stats, and these stats are later used to make important decisions. 

The branching is fantastic—every little decision you make can have a huge impact on the trajectory of your story. Different scenes unlock based on story choices and clothing selections. I also love that they don’t make you wait until the end of season 2 or beginning of season 3 to get into the spicy scenes—and trust me, the authors deliver on the spice. 

The stories are moderate in terms of the gem price. If you like to buy the outfits, it can get pretty pricey in terms of gems. But. And there is a big but, the gem packs are some of the most reasonable I have seen on any story game app. If you’re patient, there are several ways to earn gems “citrines” in the game.

In three out of the five stories, you can play an MC who is Asian, Black or Latina. The stories you can’t do this with are because of historical circumstances and/or location and make sense in the story. Which brings me to a bit of a gripe. The game allows selection of diverse MCs, but the CGs don’t reflect this diversity, which is disappointing. Also, I would like to see deeper skin tones for the black characters and improved graphics for braided and natural hairstyles. Some of the hair options still have a pale scalp and can look a little odd. I hope in the future they will improve upon skin tones, hairstyles, and CGs. 

The UI is very user friendly and allows you to bookmark your favorite scenes for viewing later. You can also view your stats and other information while in the game to keep track of your progress. Also, love how after you finish a chapter, it seamlessly allows you to continue to the next chapter. I haven’t run into any game breaking bugs or hiccups so far. This app really does run very smoothly.

Lastly, a word about the translations: In most of the stories, the translations are excellent with a very few mistakes. Unfortunately, Suit of Swords has quite a few errors in translations that make for a very confusing read. The text is rife with pronoun and incorrect word usage. Statements are attributed to the wrong character and/or addressed to the wrong character. I absolutely love this story, so I hope they fix it soon.

All in all, a great app with a collection of phenomenal stories that with some improvements could be one of the best Interactive Story apps out there.

Unfinished stories?

Not sure how old or new this app is. But the one story I was interested in, suddenly says it's to be continued at chapter 6. Since app only has 4-5 stories total. I'm guessing those are unfinished as well? It doesn't even let player know when or if it'll continue. Kind of a bummer since I was in middle and now have to stop. Otherwise, the story I was reading seemed very interesting?
