Description

Music notation is made simple with this shorthand system which puts chords into numbers 1 though 7 and streamlines the page into a simple and clean format. Forget about pencil, erasers and photocopy! This app combines technology with tried and tested methods; allowing users to create song charts with the ease and speed of pen and paper.

For over 60 years, the Nashville Number System has been the standard for musicians in live performance, recording sessions, and teaching environments. The published book has become required reading in many of the most prestigious music schools, including Belmont, ETSU, Lee and Liberty University, while also being required reading for anyone when they get their first gig in music city.

This innovative app brings the must-read instructional book by Chas Williams, with well over 50,000 copies sold, into our digital age by seamlessly allowing charts to be written on your digital device!

Truly wonderful!

I have spoke with the developers a few times and they have truly created something wonderful. Is it buggy? Yes. Are they always taking feedback to improve? Yes. I submitted a suggestion yesterday and it is already in the cue for an update. I do wish we had updates more frequently, but this is created by developers who are not full time developers and this is a side project from their main careers. However, this reason is another for why this app will blow you away. I use it and then transfer the PDF to ForScore to store and annotate and it’s a wonderful combination! Couldn’t recommend it more!

Outstanding Concept - Almost 5 Stars

What a useful app. Aside from the occasional bug this app is incredibly useful for professional musicians. It allows for very quick charting with good arrangement detail. There are a few minor updates that will make this app outstanding:

1) The app needs to support landscape mode, at least on on iPad.

2) When copying sections, it would be great if it copied annotations too.

3) Annotations get easily wonky if any edits are made above them, ie adding a diamond pushes the chart down but not the annotations. Ideally the annotations should stay aligned with the row they are written on.

4) I would absolutely love the ability to add text. For
Repeats I often type things like “x4” but this is not ideal because the numbers used in this way will still turn to chords in ABC mode. I prefer this over annotations because of the issues in #3 above.

5) A better way of showing time signature changes would be really useful. Annotations is also tough here due to #3 above.

6) Thr clear/delete functions are slightly confusing. This is manageable now but there could be some UX adjustments here to make it a bit more intuitive.

7) Allowing a tap to enter tempo would be amazing. This currently requires a second app.

These are somewhat picky suggestions. The app overall is really useful, and these enhancements would solve most of the gaps I’ve encountered when using this for gig situations.

Great app for charting

I’m new to the Nashville Number system and had been writing charts out by hand. Now that I have others to play with, I’m using this app to make cleaner charts and quickly send them via email. Switching to the letter names is a HUGE feature - perfect for when you have musicians not accustomed to the number system.

My only feature request would be text annotations, and the ability to insert a time signature change. Definitely check this one out!

Developer Response ,

Hi weirdsbeach, I'm so glad you like the app! Thanks for the good review!
We also would like to have moveable text boxes. That would be very cool It is definitely on the list for a new V2 that will be coming out later this year.

I hear what you're saying about time signature changes. In Nashville, most time sig changes are for an extra half measure or so at the end of a phrase. For example, when a song in 6/8 has and extra measure of 3/8, instead of changing TS to 3/8 and then again back to 6/8, you put 3 hash marks over the bar and box it in if you like.
However, with a song that changes from 4/4 to 3/4, for example, you would have to handwrite the TS change.

Check out my FB page for some examples of charts that have what we're talking about. Let us know if we can help?
Thanks,
Chas
