Zavala is a modern take on a traditional outliner. It supports all the things you want in a Mac app like multiple windows, keyboard shortcuts, a customizable toolbar, and a full menu bar.

Version 3.3
* You can now navigate the full user interface using the keyboard. One effect of this is that selected items now have a gray background unless you are focused on them. Focused items (being actively selected) are the accent color now.
* Added localizations for Australian English and British English.
* Printed Topics now correctly use the system serif font to make them easier to read on paper.
* When printing an Outline as a list, the Notes field uses a slightly smaller font size than the Topic to make it easier to discern.
* The Title field cursor is now brighter when the default accent color is used so that it matches the curser used in the rest of the Outline Editor.
* The cursor now appears much faster when creating a new Outline.
* Made restoring the cursor position when opening an Outline much faster.
* When selecting multiple Rows and then dragging by a Row other than the first one, then cancelling the drag would result in uneditable rows. This has been fixed.
* A bug that could cause a Row to be dropped into the wrong location when dragging downwards has been fixed.
Ratings and Reviews
Genuinely great
It doesn't have every possible outlining feature, but it does exactly what it says on the tin, and it looks and feels like a native macOS app that's as a no-nonsense as Apple's own bundled utilities. iCloud sync seems to be flawless, and similarly export to Markdown. The app's Universal, so everything is right there on my phone as well. Honestly, I wish all Mac apps were like this, it's a breath of fresh air.
This has turned into a really nice app!
Zavala is now a highly accomplished outliner, comparable to Workflowy, Dynalist or Outlinely. With the advance to V2 the developer's optimised many different aspects of the app, from the appearance to support for images through to the search function. And best of all, still free! I recommend very highly.
For free it suits my needs
Didn't need anything too complex and this seems more intuitive than one I was considering buying.
Just shows you, look around and there's plenty of usesful software that won't cost, so to the developer thank you.
