This app will help you to detect studs. It uses the magnetometer to measure the magnetic field when your iPhone is placed near any metal objects.

INSTRUCTIONS: If your device has an external case then please remove it before using this app.

Does this app really work?
One way to check is to hold the phone close to a stainless steel knife and see that the indicator changes.

Does not work! 😤

Shortly after downloading this app and reading the instructions it asked to get the full version for £5.00… And £5.00 for nothing!! Even by increasing the sensor sensitivity, the best reading I could get was a value of 20 which did not stabilise (as I moved across the wall that same reading extended to every location on the wall I was scanning through).

I found another app (free this one!) with a very similar logo and it worked just fine by adjusting to the right sensitivity until I got a signal. If you are considering this app like I did pass your way!
