Downcast 4+

This is my primary podcasting up for its power user features. I used to love it and swear by it as it was stable and allowed me to have fine grain control on all aspects of my podcasting experience.

Unfortunately, the app has become less stable and has not innovated in any way for quite some time. Other podcasting apps have been adding features and improvements to the UI. While the UI is functional here, it needs some redesign to bring it up with the current times. In terms of features, I'd like to see some form of podcast triage as Downcast is the app that occupies most space on my device with 6GB+ used due to the downloading of new episodes in the background. Although I can change new episode actions, the triage solution would work much better imo.

Also, while I’m grateful the developer has released an update (despite being minor) the fact that it literally took 1 year to do this tells you this app is not really being supported. If you’re new I’d look at an alternative for now

##Quick update to mention that I’m still loving the app’ after over a decade, in the days when you could buy a podcast app’ instead of subscribing to one.
Also grateful that I haven’t been asked to buy the app’ again as version 2 etc.

##Update## For no good reason I decided to try the other big paid podcast app'. In a nutshell Downcast is still the best podcast experience I've had. When something works so well you want to try something else you must be a little tapped. I must have been! ## This allowed me to continue listening to my usual podcasts after uninstalling the data hogging and surprisingly bad new iOS Podcasts app. Looks great, works great and has incorporated lots of user feedback. I love this app and highly recommend it. I will not be following the progress the Apple disaster; wow, what are they doing?!!

After irreparably smashing my old iPhone I’ve had to migrate to a new one. I’ve also decided not to restore a rolling backup that started some 10 years ago and configure from scratch. So, I thought, I’ll check what podcasting apps there are out there. The apple one be must have got better by now. And I’ve heard good things about Overcast.

Well, it seems that downcast has spoiled me for all other podcasting apps cause there appears to be nothing that does everything that I “need” other than downcast. I mean, no one else has a full 2 pages of options for playlists, most of which I actually use! What about the ability to throw in my mp3 recordings of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy tapes I once owned?

Suffice it to say that I’m reinstalling Downcast on my new phone and I’ll just let it sort itself out because, of course, it syncs everything that matters to iCloud.
