Diving Smartwatch | Oceanic‪+‬ 4+

I really enjoyed using the app across phone and watch. I am a newer diver and comparing this to rental units. Stand out features are the use of haptics and the changing interface that highlight key messages making it far more impactful than a monochrome LCD display and beeps. I think these will hold up against event top end computers. I’d expect this to drive new computers to similar features and unlikely the watch will ever get specialist features like gas integration.

BUT my AWU2’s battery life took a noticeable dip when having the app’s watch face active and, presumably, other features in the background. This was true even after coming home and no longer needing time to fly and max elevation feedback. To be clear NOT catastrophic - like running out during the day but no longer multi-day. I don’t know if it’s possible but I’d like to see a Home / Diving mode switch that explicitly disables whatever background processes are happening that are null once back to the 9-5.

I am a highly experienced and certified diver. I purchased this app to try it out as a secondary dive computer on my Apple Watch Ultra. My primary is the Suunto Eon Core. The app asks me to my surprise, to verify that I am fit and ready to dive. My dive medical actually verified that I am fit to dive. I then verify that I am ready to do a dive by listening to a dive plan briefing, and then doing pre dive buddy checks with my dive buddy. My expectation of this app therefore, is to simply activate, like any other dive computer would do, when I have entered the water and begun descent. Simple right? This app activates on descent with a question: “I am fit and ready to dive”. It asks me to press the action button to confirm. I am then distracted with continuously pressing the action button to no avail. I have my Suunto dive computer and it is actively functioning as expected. This oceanic dive app is not. It displays “I am fit and ready to dive” for the whole dive, and does not respond to the action button being pressed. Industry standards already exist for how dive computers should perform, and that should be the developer baseline for an app. I have owned many professional dive computers and I have never had one that will ask me to verify if I am fit to dive when I have begun my dive. Where do you get off actually asking me that question, and why did the developer consider it necessary to introduce this idiocy? Don’t risk your life diving with this app!

I am a recreational diver who has attempted to use this app a few times. The actual diving experience is fine - nothing fancy but satisfying all my needs. The problem is that the app is unreliable: it resets or stops working half way through a snorkelling session, it synchronises with lag of hours and no obvious notification, it unloads and looses sessions and generally feels unstable. Support for the app has never responded with anything useful beyond the new version aims to fix all bugs. My latest experience: I have been trying to reestablish connection between the watch and phone app with no help from the app, support or any procedures that you can find on the website. It feels that Apple has misplaced their trust in a company and an app that does not try to represent the same standards of quality and usability and I hopeful that there will be a better alternative to this soon rather than letting this hardware feature become a gimmick through the limited features and unreliability of this app.
