Old and new blend beautifully in Afterplace, a retro-style adventure with a delightfully modern tone. Intuitive one-touch controls let you easily battle foes and chat up characters, but this game’s far from simple.
We knew we loved it when: We walked up to a vending machine to buy some gear…and it attacked us! Quirky humor and oddball characters keep this journey brilliantly unpredictable. An enticing storefront is actually just a poster a prankster put on a wall (as you find out when you try to run inside—ouch!). A troll guard questions his self-worth when you stroll past him. Even the creepy floating eyeball cracked us up with its self-effacing monologues.

Our favorite discovery: Secret passages! Nothing’s quite as it seems in Afterplace. You never know when you might stumble upon a hidden path whisking you to a dark forest or an inter-dimensional void. The game’s multiple endings ensure you won’t unravel all of Afterplace’s mysteries in one playthrough.
Biggest surprise: It’s all made by just one person. Self-taught developer Evan Kice spent four years meticulously crafting Afterplace, from its adorable pixel-art graphics to its stirring soundtrack.
