Description
For USA Weather only:
wXL23 is a free, no-ads, and open-source ( GNU GPLv3 / APL2.0 ) advanced weather application that is geared towards storm chasers, meteorologists, and weather enthusiasts. NWS ( National Weather Service ) data is optimized for mobile format and provided for divisions not normally covered together in the mobile space: SPC, WPC, NHC, OPC, etc. Level 3 Nexrad radar (single, dual, quad pane). This weather app is not affiliated with NOAA or the National Weather Service.
If you *only* need current conditions and your local 7 day forecast then this app is probably more then you need although it will easily provide those 2 things as well. If you are looking for wasted screen real estate or fancy graphics this app is not for you. Given the depth of information covered there is a steep learning curve if you seek to use the program in it's entirety, help information is available and touched on below. Common weather acronyms are used throughout so you should be familiar with those as well. Currently United States locations are supported.
- Current forecast, 7 day conditions, sounding data for an unlimited number of locations from NWS.
- Customizable home screen
- Metal based Nexrad radar interface with numerous options. 2 pane and 4 pane version also available in MISC tab.
- Optimized text product viewer for easy access to AFD, HWO and others from any NWS WFO.
- Vis/IR/WV/Radar mosaic viewer ( with animations ).
- SPC products (such as Watches/MCDs/Convective Outlooks/Mesoanalysis)
- WPC products
- Weather models
- NHC products
NOTE: iPhone 5s or newer required for Nexrad radar viewer.

Ratings and Reviews
I’ve been through them all!
This has got to be one of the best apps out there for what it is. And at no cost? Come on man. I’ve paid for more weather apps / subscriptions in my time, I’m sure I could have covered another mortgage payment or two. This app is so rich with data and it seems everything has been though of. This guy is great for allowing these features with no ads (my deal breaker). Yeah yeah, it’s the user interface and navigation is not so easy and has a large learning curve. Lots of overload info. I get that, but people who are worried about that kind of thing aren’t using apps like this. It has saved me so much time traveling to NWS, pivotal weather, etc.. Yes, yes, I get it, you still need your RadarScope, a laptop to not strain your eyes, and your not so skinny fingers to hit two buttons at once on these little phones, but dang sure makes it nice having MRMS mosaic to fill in the gaps on the go. Kudos team! Please continue to support this app with no ads. Thanks from all of us that actually care about the weather and not just beautiful colors rolling past me like a Van Gogh painting assuming red means heavy rain.
great!
I just recently went down the rabbit hole of weather and storm chasing, and this app is the perfect companion for that obsession. I’m genuinely amazed that an app with such a depth of information doesn’t even have ads, and there’s no paywall to more advanced information! it’s all there, even if it’s a little difficult to sort though at times, especially if you’re not well versed in weather models and terminology. after two or so days though, I got a hang of where I could find the information I actually needed. the dual pane radar is great, although it’s a little slow to play animations, and occasionally the animations will crash the app unfortunately. that for me is the only real drawback besides the slightly difficult to grasp interface. I also noticed that the radar on an app like radarscope refreshes more quickly, but it’s not enough in my opinion to justify the ten dollars. besides the radar, the variety of models and spc predictions are great for forecasting. incredible app!
The Greatest Weather App
I’ve tried a bunch of weather apps, but this is the only one that delivered all of the information I wanted. I initially found this app because of the radar function, and was quite glad to see that it delivers the data straight from the NWS. The forecast/current conditions from the NWS is also appreciated, as it avoids me having to navigate the clunky web interface from them. If that wasn’t enough, the wealth of products from the SPC and others is unparalleled when I want to get deeper than just the radar and forecast. One small issue I occasionally experience is only having the current conditions load (only affects one station at a time) unless I refresh it by switching to another station and back again. I’m not sure if that’s an issue on my end, the app, or the NWS’ API. Once again, thank you for this wonderful app.
