Editors’ Notes

Time is like money: we never have enough, and we often can’t remember how we spent it. Timelines is razor-sharp instrument in our time-management toolkit, letting us categorize and visualize where the hours in our hectic days are going. We love it for everything from tracking billable time on projects to making sure we’re setting aside chunks of our week to relax with loved ones.

Many thoughtful touches

Recently started using Timelines again after falling away from tracking my time for too long. It’s so intuitive getting started, but the details make it powerful and have the feel of Lukas smartly responding to user feedback over the years. For example, when entering a task, you discover you can quickly switch between clock time and duration entry and change the minutes step of the tumbler, from a single minute to, say, 10 or 15 minutes. This happens right from the entry. It’s discoverable but still goes away when you’re done with it. Another example: at first, titling tasks seems freeform, and it is. You can call them whatever works for you; it’s not making you define strong categories that might not work for you later. However, next time you type a title, you realize it’s saved past titles as labels in the background and presents them above the keyboard so you can easily assign them again and summarize them later. By the way, it saves these labels only within each Timeline (category you’re tracking), which keeps the keyboard list from getting cluttered. Super useful app. I’ve tried other ways of time tracking and haven’t found another that just works this easily and stays out of the way otherwise.

I live by this app…

I use this app nonstop all day every day for years now. This isn’t just a time tracking app. You could use it for a full journaling solution. I journal extensively about health, fitness, nutrition, studies, all kinds of metrics. What food I eat and when, what supplements I take and when, how much piano I practiced, how much Chinese I studied and what kind of lesson it was, notes about my weightlifting, different physical symptoms I’m currently trying to improve, my mood, etc. The flexibility of the app lets me set it up exactly the way I want. Being able to use my Apple Watch to make entries ridiculously quickly is so helpful. I use the widgets to track daily goals. I export the data to CSV files and import it into a database so that I can integrate it with a custom solution I have to give me a 360° view of my entire life. The developer is incredibly friendly and helpful and responsive. In my opinion this app should have millions of users using it. I hope the developer always continues to maintain it because I would literally be lost without it. I have never found a better solution to solve the problem that I solve with this app.
