Editors’ Notes

Teleporting mages? Dodging checkmate by rewinding? We’ve never played chess quite as surreal as this inventive roguelike.

Good game some bugs

Great game with a lot of potential. A little on the pricey side at 7.99 for the full game. If this game keeps getting updated it’ll be great and worth that price tag. Some weird bugs such as if the AI has portal mages, they seem to be able to capture any piece they want without being adjacent to a piece. And some extra turn relics not working right.

Mostly Good

Chess with rogue-like upgrades and “Really Bad Chess”-like board randomization is a great idea, and Ouroboros King delivers on the premise. The upgrades are simple and feel powerful, the interface is simple but good, later units go buck wild, which is fun. On the other hand - units and upgrades do not feel at all balanced, and restarting until you get favorable units and a favorable map can become tedious. Income is very limited and your units cap at 7, which is awkward. I’d love to see some balance improvements or expanded play options, but it’s still fun enough as-is for a few hours. I’m bad at chess but made it to “7.” I don’t know if I have it in me to grind it out past that.
UPDATE: After 6 months with no updates, it’s clear that issues will never be addressed.
