Stories behind the recipes and the food we grew up with in the 1950 & 60’s

Do you fondly (well mainly) remember those delicious meals prepared for you when you were growing up? For us in the 1950-60's it was all about meat, pudding and cakes. So if you want to relive the athentic feel of growing up in Australia back then, have a go at making our family recipes. Some recipes date back to our grandparents time, which were handed down. Sadly when we started out in our 20's pre packed and take away food became readily available and we have lost some of the skills that our parents tried to teach us. Having said that we eat more healthy with more variety now, however it is always a joy to go down memory lane and share the stories behind them and the memories we hold.
Take one mouthful of the Jam Roly Poly and I am immediately transported to the family kitchen, where meals were prepared and eaten with stories of the days activities shared. And those sponges. There are still out there now, thank goodness, but harder to find. There is nothing better than taking a mouthful of that delicious cream, icing and sponge and let it melt in your mouth. Luckily we are still able to have the Christmas Plum Pudding handed down from friend's Grandmother. I think she is up to 2 large, 3 medium and several small ones (luckily I get one of the medium one). And those Shortbreads!
It was not all about the puddings and cakes (well it was for me). The homemade Party Pies (I still have mum's tins to make them in) and Cornish Pasties, the Roast on a Sunday with left over lamb for sandwiches with homemade Tomato Sauce or Relish. Or maybe a batch of Hash in the pan, if there was any lamb left.
So let's get started.......but a warning back then everything was in ounces, pounds, pints and a cup was anything you could find int he cupboard. Some recipes have been converted and others are just as they were back them. Happy memories!
