Editors’ Notes

Navigating breaking news is a pleasure with this flagship app from the world-renowned news organization, Reuters. This highly polished app comes packed with quality content, graceful transitions, and super fast navigation. Whether you’re looking for the latest political news, checking in on tech events, or tracking stocks in your portfolio, Reuters is a boon.

No More Widget

I have not been a fan of the latest updates, but I kept the app on my phone because Reuters is a non-bias source for news. That all said the last half dozen updates have been terrible. The new interface is harder to navigate and not as easy to read as the older versions. Another big reason I initially used this app was because I could put a news widget on my homepage. Now all of a sudden the widget has been removed. Very disappointing. It seems as though the developers updates are taking features away in an effort to streamline the look and feel of the app. All those efforts have resulted in an app that I use less, because features have been removed and it is more difficult to navigate to see the news I’m interested in. I went ahead and downloaded the AP News app which unfortunately does not have a news widget, but seems to be easier to navigate and organized better to make for easy reading, and navigation. I’ll continue to have both on my phone, but I find myself using the Reuters news app less and less every month. if they brought back the homepage widget, I would probably use this app more.

First Registration, now Subscription required

I love Reuters news and reporting; I have truly gotten so much value from the accessible and unbiased journalism over the years. Unfortunately, I will no longer be getting my news from Reuters, which is truly a shame in a society plagued by bias, inaccessibility, and lack of integrity.

I categorically refuse to support pay-walled news, and now the app is useless to me. I was frustrated when I was first required to Register and account to view stories, but I was willing to give up my data/identity because I understand that registration enables more revenue to be extracted from advertisements and data. I wasn't happy about it but tolerated it given how ubiquitous it is in the modern tech landscape.

What I don't accept is suddenly seeing that I cannot access stories without paying a $4 monthly subscription. Seriously? I can honestly say I would likely have donated of my own free will, after all I can afford to and it's the least, I could do after getting so much value. But I refuse to support an organization which is gatekeeping news and knowledge behind a paywall. I guess 150% increase in stock price in the last 5 years was not sufficient. Sources like AP, NPR, and ProPublica will have my support. I'm sure I am a minority opinion on his topic, but I would encourage anyone reading this to do the same.
