Description

RaysWeather.Com has been the go-to weather source for Western North Carolina and Southwest Virginia for 22 years. The re-release of the App puts Ray's Forecast, over 60 weather stations, 30 webcams, and 10 custom radar loops in your pocket. And don't forget the Golf-o-Meter, Snowman-O-Mometer, and Photo of the Day. It's all there.

Bait and switch

Was great - you paid for the app and could set your favorite- now it has updated and that is all gone and you have to pay monthly to get the old features- so disappointing - can’t set a favorite forecast and the interface is much clunkier

Stick with the (free) browser version

Legacy users are irked by paying to download the app and then being given the same service as the free browser version (including large ads across the app), but the app (required to access subscription content) itself is problematic even for paid users — the UX is clunky and awkward to navigate, filled with ads, and slow to load and crashes even on the iPhone 15 and across recent iOS updates.

You NEED to download the app to access favorites, which is an issue for those not living in Boone, and that requires a subscription for premium services, which really only gives Boone users access to a snow map and other users a retroactive “benefit” of not having to click multiple times to see their local weather — which can only be done through the app — and was historically included with the app download fee.

I understand the desire to further monetize the service, but failing to survey current users or grandfather them in and then putting out a janky app was just bad business. We should all get our money back from Ray, and Ray should get his back from whatever crappy app dev he used.

Doesn’t show asheville weather

New app design forces me to look at Boone weather by default, and it takes many taps to look at asheville weather. This appears to be in deference to their new paid subscription service which of course makes viewing asheville weather easy by allowing “favorites.” Edit: the best workaround I can find is to tap on the Map button and then choose asheville. Glad to find it, but it’s still not right that easily getting to the correct forecast for my area requires a subscription.

Edit: they have changed the app icon to be a white guy’s face. Not what I want to see when I turn my phone on every morning. Please change it back to puffy clouds or something pleasant, please!
