Plugo by PlayShifu 4+

Great idea, and engages kids well. I had some trouble when we first installed it, relating to use of a phone rather than a tablet. This led to some frustrating mixed messages for my kids about what was or was not right.

The Plugo team was incredibly engaged and helped me resolve the issue, probably involved changing some app settings on their end even.

I have been slow updating my prior negative review and feel badly about that, this team deserves a lot of credit for this great educational app

Hi Alan - Apologies for the experience. We definitely strive for making learning fun and accurate for kids! We did not design the experience to be the way you described, and it definitely sounds something of an AR detection issue or bug. iPod is not in our compatible device list, hence we have not tested it on iPods. My daughter got this as a gift some time ago and I could never get this to work. First it got stuck on the first word “good” and it wouldn’t recognize the second “o”. We also couldn’t skip past it so we’ve never been able to get past the first word. I put it aside and then some time later tried downloading it on a another device (apple product). It went on an endless syncing cycle and after a long time without completing the syncing process I just gave up. I put it aside to donate it, but decided to give it one last go (it’s been at least 6 month but maybe more). I tried it again and it took several times for it to recognize that the letter kit was placed on the pad. We got to the word “good” again and once we were done, it did nothing. There is no other button to submit or proceed, only a help button or reload from the beginning. Reloading from the beginning means we have to go through the painful process of placing the letter kit and hoping the app recognizes it. Clicking help requests that we have to enable the camera. By that point my daughter was completely bored. Maybe I got a defective kit. Unfortunately I can’t rate the learning experience, but the installation process was 0 stars- and like I said, I tried it 3 times and on different devices.

For the price of the equipment, the software still leaves A LOT to be desired. The English language translations are often clunky, the verbal request for an answer to a problem or puzzle repeats endlessly and we end up muting most of the time. The algorithm that choses difficulty levels seems a little random offering too broad a choice of problems to solve. The spelling is the same every time you visit a lesson and doesn’t provide a fresh set of words to spell each visit.

The plus side is the equipment is very well made and all has a nice feel to it. It is pretty colors and the design is perfectly cute for kids.

I really hope the developers put a lot more effort into smoothing the bugs out of the software otherwise it would just feel like I paid too much for this system.
