You could travel without a laptop because the few things you cannot do are the sort of thing you only do when doing some serious bookkeeping with your accounting software. Anyway I take a MacBook Air because other apps have even more restrictions. Even at home I do much of my banking on this app, and not on my desktop. The website is also much improved, although downloading files in CSV format produces one L-O-N-G line for ALL transactions instead of one line for EACH transaction. But that’s the website, not the app. The phone app is great.

App is terrible, constantly freezes and closes, 99% of the time I have to log in on their website to do anything.
This whole company is really behind in banking technology. I really hate to leave this review but I don’t want anyone else suckered into this bank. I had a small loan with them for credit building purposes because I heard they were such a great bank. Every month I log in to try to pay my bill & every month my external account does not show up. I end up having to pay over the phone & they will charge enormous late fees. My payment was $10 and I was charged a $40 late fee! Every month I’m told to try again linking my account. I try and it won’t let me make payments. I finally spoke with someone yesterday who told me my account “is not eligible” for ach transfers. I.E : I cannot pay my bill. I was trying to pay it off to get away from these people but they literally would not take my money. She told me I had no other option but to mail a paper check. I don’t even have a checkbook! Who uses checks still? I’m convinced they drag this out every month to be able to charge a late fee. It’s really disheartening that this is a bank made for our servicemen and women. I’d hate to think they are taking advantage of others the way they have me but I’m certain I’m not the only one. Stay far, far away from this bank if only to save yourself the aggravation of a bank stuck in the last century.

Update Nov 2024 - Back to 1 star. They updated the app to only use passkeys. Passkeys was not tested properly. I can’t use on my locked down iPhone. Penfed messed this up!!!! Update Nov 2023 - they pushed out an update and the interface looks amazing. Everything seems to work. Raised my score from 1 star to 5. I only use it for credit card so can’t speak on any banking update. Great job Dev Team! Updated July 2023: Things are still not going well. They are working with salesforce to update their online presence and it is not going well. Hopefully things will get better by 2025. I only use them for credit card at this point. The travel card is with it, but I might be looking for something else soon if the issues are not cleaned up. Old review: This app is such a disappointment. I have banking apps from other banks that work great... NFCU, Ally, CapitalOne, etc. I thought penfed could put those to rest and I would do all my banking with penfed. No, that won’t happen. Customer service is slow in answering emails - takes at least 3 days. The phone “rang” busy when I called for several hours. The app is lacking several features. If you perform an INTERNAL transfer t takes 5 or 6 days. Not external but internal. External are also 5 to 6 days. Competitors move internal transfers immediately and external within 3 days. Take a hard pass on this bank.
