Description

This official app is a portal for exploring the diverse lands and heritage sites managed by the U.S. Forest Service. A powerful exploration tool, this app allows you to discover forests near you and can help you explore each destination's points of interest. Use this app for easy access to forest facts, natural, cultural, and historic information, offline and GPS maps, recreational opportunities, and other essential visitor information to enjoy our National Forests and Grasslands.

The perfect companion for your next forest adventure or armchair travels, each app was developed by the forest unit’s rangers and interpretive staff and features a variety of content, including educational audio tours and natural and historic imagery. Plan your itinerary of things to see and do with easy access to information regarding recreational opportunities, trails, maps, and visitor centers.

Each forest destination can be downloaded individually from the portal, allowing you to stay up to date with your favorite destinations through push notifications alerts for closures and events. Connect with Visitor Centers and Ranger Stations using one-tap calling and submit valuable feedback or report concerns with surveys. OnCell has worked closely with each forest as the official provider of their mobile apps.

You can expect additional forests to be added to this app over time, as the U.S. Forest Service continues it's commitment to provide exciting and relevant visitor information in easy to access formats.

Review

I’ve camped in USFS campgrounds for over 50 years in many states in all kinds of campers and tents. I’ve never had a bad experience. I’ve also rented a lookout tower and had a very memorable experience with my children who now have kids of their own. I wish the Forest Service was better funded. They could do an even better job.

Love NFS but App could use work

I’m in CO right now, trying to use this app’s gps map feature to identify where national forest boundaries are in relation to me. I’m just seeing a lot of light green to slightly darker green overlap, boundaries and territories aren’t well labeled and clear, even with the forest I’m near downloaded. This is the main feature of the app too / it doesn’t
Offer much other than this.

If you click on “forest information” it takes you to NFS’s website, and the website has a much better gps map feature with clearer boundaries. This “interactive” map on the website offers a lot more in terms of locating trails/campgrounds etc. , but you of course need to be hooked up to the web to access it.

GPS itself though is separate from the web/cell service, and is accessible from way more remote areas than cell service. SO, if the app had downloadable maps for forests, that populated all of the recreation sites (trailheads campground etc.) into a local file on your phone that GPS could access when you open it and select that map, that would be amazing.

Also too though, even if that is not ever accomplished - boundaries and labeling of territories in the app’s map as is, could use some work.

Love you guys though, thank you!

Had potential to be great, but false advertising

I was really looking forward to using this app. The forest service has a great interactive map feature on their websites with trailhead, campground and other recreation information...I sort of thought this would be an improved, mobile version of that...the description promised off-line maps and trip planning options, I found none of that. The overall forest map is inaccurate and incomplete. When you do download a specific forest, the interface is super basic and pretty much offers nothing except a link to the NFS website for that area, which is then not mobile viewer friendly... not worth downloading
