A picture is worth 1000 words.

When you compare the old version to the new version you don’t even get the same order of definitions if you look up the exact same word. Below I used a simple example so the results can be easily compared.

Is there an explanation for these radical changes?

TIKES!!!!!!!!

Below I looked up the word “mamas” on the new version. Here are the first several entries. The old format reflects both the complexity and the subtlety of the Sanskrit language. See for yourselves below:

abhi-manas mfn. 'having the mind directed towards', desirous of, longing for (acc.) R. &c

abhi-manasya Nom. Ā. (Opt. -manasyéta) 'to have the mind directed towards', be pleased with, like AV. xi, 3, 25

abhi-ni-√viś -viśate, to enter (with acc.) Pāṇ. 1-4, 47 Sch to disembogue (as a river) into (acc.) BhP to devote one's self entirely to (acc.) Daś. &c.: Caus. -veśayati, to cause to enter, lead into (acc.) BhP to cause to sit down upon (loc.) Śiś to cause any one to devote himself entirely to MBh. &c., (with manas, or ātmānam) to devote one's attention to (loc.) BhP

manas (ácitta-), m. N. of two Ṛishis MaitrS. Kāṭh

manas (ácyuta-), m. N. of two Maharshis TĀr

manas mfn. not friendly-minded, inimical

ā-lambana n. depending on or resting upon hanging from supporting, sustaining ] (with Buddhists) the five attributes of things (apprehended by or connected with the five senses, viz. form, sound, smell, taste, and touch also dharma or law belonging to manas)

manas mfn. satisfied in mind BhP. (cf. arámaṇas s.v. áram.)

á-manas as n. non-perception, want of perception ŚBr. xiv (a-manás), mfn. without perception or intellect ŚBr. xiv silly ChUp

ā́-manas mfn. friendly disposed, kind, favourable ii, 36, 6

a-manaska mfn. without perception or intellect Sarvad silly KaṭhUp not well-disposed, lowspirited Kād

Compare this with looking up the same word in the older version:

1. ⋙ acittamanas
○manas (ácitta-), m. N. of two Ṛishis MaitrS. Kāṭh
2. ⋙ acyutamanas
○manas (ácyuta-), m. N. of two Maharshis TĀr
3. ⋙ ananyamanas
○manas or mfn. exercising undivided attention
4. ⋙ ananyamanaska
○manaska or mfn. exercising undivided attention
5. ⋙ antarindriya
○indriya n. (in Vedānta phil.) an internal organ (of which there are four, viz. manas, buddhi, ahaṃkāra, and citta)
6. ⋙ antarmanas
○manas mfn. sad, perplexed L
7. ⋙ antargatamanas
○manas mfn. whose mind is turned inwards, engaged in deep thought, sad, perplexed
8. ⋙ anyamanas
○manas or mfn. whose mind is fixed on something else, absent, versatile
