Description

In the mid-1980s a few brothers were disenchanted about the quality of masjid services in Derby, for example poor education for children and youth, the lack of a collective dawah effort and a general lack of guidance for the people on matters of deen. They decided that enough was enough and bought a large property on Western Road and converted this to a Musallah and Madrassah, thereby providing much better quality of services for the people of Derby. This was called Jamia Hanfia.

Gradually the numbers of people taking benefit from Jamia Hanfia increased to such an extent that this place became too small to serve the local community.

The management committee started to search for bigger premises in the local vicinity, and in 2007 a piece of land (Approx 0.5acres) was bought on Mill Hill Lane. The idea was to build a large purpose built masjid on this plot of land.

The Al-Farooq Trust was set up in 2008 to manage this project. In 2012 after much hard work, the planning permission was granted for a £5M masjid. Further information about this can be seen in the ”Projects” section of the App. We continued to make efforts to raise funds for this project in the following years.

However, in 2015 the former Christadelphian Church on Mill Hill Lane came up for sale. This was situated immediately adjacent to the plot of land we
acquired in 2007. We bought this Church building and renovated and
refurbished it to convert it to what is now called Masjid Al-Farooq.

Masjid Al-Farooq was officially opened in May 2017. The Western Road
building was retained as a Madrassah for girls and a facility for the use by
ladies. The original Masjid Al-Farooq Project has been put on hold for the time being. The 0.5acre land is currently being used as a car park for the users of the masjid.

Masjid Al-Farooq will deliver the aims of the Al-Farooq Trust as follows;
- Be a facility for prayers, education, dawah effort and other Islamic needs
of the community.

- To make efforts that will encourage and enable everyone in the
community to embrace, practice and propagate Islam.

- To facilitate a greater understanding and awareness of the teachings of Islam.

- To educate Muslims from all walks of life, especially young Muslims, in all aspects of their spiritual and religious development.

- To support the Muslim community (and by doing so the wider community) by promoting good morals & character; conduct and addressing areas of social concerns, such as anti-social behaviour, radicalisation, criminality, substance abuse and family breakdowns.
