Description

This is an iPad edition of the hymnal Glory to God: Hymns, Psalms, & Spiritual Songs, with razor-sharp music, powerful search capabilities, sample piano recordings of hymns, interesting information about hymns and their authors, and the ability to access several different versions of hymns including pew, accompaniment, large print, projection, lead sheet, and instrumental (strings, brass, and woodwinds).

This free app includes the pew version of all 235 of the public domain hymns in Glory to God: Hymns, Psalms, & Spiritual Songs, including favorites such as “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” and “Take My Life and Let It Be.” You can add various editions of the hymnal, which include copyrighted as well as public domain hymns, with in-app purchases:
• Pew $19.99
• Large Print $24.99
• Accompaniment $49.99
• Accompaniment with FlexScores $99.99
• Alto Sax Edition, $24.99
• Bass Edition, $24.99
• Bassoon Edition, $24.99
• Cello Edition, $24.99

• Trumpet Edition, $24.99
• Tuba Edition, $24.99

• Violin Edition, $24.99

For each hymn there is a page of information that may include a description of the hymn, a brief biography of the author or composer, and information for worship leaders such as performance suggestions and available arrangements. A brief audio clip is also available.

The search box allows you to search for hymns by first line, author, composer, topic, or scripture passages quoted or alluded to. You can also jump immediately to a hymn by number.

The Accompaniment with FlexScores edition includes everything in the other editions and adds our revolutionary FlexScores for most of the hymns. These include large print, lead sheet, projection, and instrumental versions. Users are able to adjust the music and text size of the scores and transpose them.

The versions offered for FlexScores include accompaniment, pew, lead sheet, projection, violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, alto saxophone, soprano or tenor saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba. For the instrumental versions, the music is transposed into an appropriate range and displayed in an appropriate clef for the instrument. The projection version enables you to connect the iPad to a projector and project hymns onto a screen.

A network connection is required to play audio samples and view FlexScores.

Note that while editions (such as the Pew Edition or Accompaniment with FlexScores Edition) of the hymnal can be transferred to other devices, individual FlexScores -- both the $1.99 and $9.99 versions -- cannot be transferred to other devices.

Now needs to wifi to work

I have used this app for a couple of years. It recently changed so it does not work if wifi is not available. This is a major issue.

Also, it does not include the text pages in the front of the hymnal. These are the pages with worship helps such as baptism, Apostles Creed, etc.

Developer Response ,

Yes, Internet is necessary for many of the features in large part because down loading sample audio files, page images for 6 different instruments, and search engine features for potentially hundreds of hymns would be too large for many devices. While this causes problems for those without an internet connection, we believe the alternatives are much worse. We would either have very limited features and materials or somewhat limited features and an app that would monopolize device resources and prevent other apps from being installed on the device. The texts are copyrighted and not available on the app. Hymnary.org contains this hymnal, and many of the hymnals in Hymnary.org contain the liturgical texts that are found in hymnals (although there may be fees associated due to copyright royalties and licenses).

No support and troubling problems

I waited four days for a response to my issues. No response. Various hymns do not display. Screen freezes regularly on IPad Pro. I have bought this hymnal twice because after about a month the first one came up showing as the free version and required me to pay again. If this was a $5 app this would be less angering but at $20 we should at least get customer service to get issues like these resolved. I have $40 invested in this and still bugs and hymns that are not available

Developer Response ,

We are sorry to hear about your issues with the app, but happy to report that we have listened to complaints such as yours. We have increased our resources spent on tech support, and we have just now started reading and responding to these reviews here. We have provided tech support in the past, but we hope to do better in the future. Also, feel free to email me directly at ccel@calvin.edu. While I'm not a tech support person, I'll be sure that someone responds to your email.

Poor performance and support

I have bought the accompanist edition of this hymnal and repeatedly tried to download and use it. On one or two occasions it has worked, briefly. Every time, after a use or two, the app "forgets" I have paid for it and demands that I buy it again. I have tried deleting and reloading to no avail. I would mind less if the pew edition were more reliable, but it is not. I have asked for support and gotten no response whatsoever. The developers are definitely ripping off the users. The formatting is the only reason to give any stars at all.

In terms of the app ‘forgetting’ the paid subscription, we do not believe this is an issue. We’ve not been able to duplicate this error in testing, and we’ve heard no other complaints since this one was posted. We apologize for the problems you’ve encountered. We have done an update on this app and corrected several issues. In terms of the tech support, Hymnary.org is a small, non-profit organization with limited resources. Providing tech support is a challenge. However, we realize the importance of this and have increased tech support resources. We have also added a table of contents that can now be reached by going to the hymnal cover page, tapping the (i) button in the top left corner, and choosing the “Table of Contents” tab.
