Expatrio - Study in Germany 4+

Great service and app

Expatrio offers a great service for expats and their app is user friendly. Be aware, however, that for the account activation process you will need a German phone number and proof of residency to complete the process, not just your passport. And while the acceptable document list gives several options, the residence permit option is the only one that worked (for me anyway).

Very disappointed

While this service seemed all inclusive and super easy to use it has turned out to be the opposite. To activate your account you need a German +49 phone number. However, to get the phone number you need the IBAN from the bank account. This leads you in a never ending circle. After scouring their website for help I found their article on cell providers, and sure enough…they ALL require an IBAN to make the purchase. Until the either contract with a company to provide a German phone number upon entry to Germany, or change the requirement for the required phone number to activate the account with YOUR money in it I will be leaving a 1 star review and telling everyone to avoid this service if at all possible. After contacting customer support I got a silly automated message giving me the exact same information I already found in their website, and I doubt the human response is going to be much different. Extremely disappointed by a product that seems so amazing until I actually need it to do things and survive. I’m glad I’m not in a medical emergency, because you can’t use that either! Pathetic how they gloss over all of these details during the entire process until the very end when you need them the most.

You do not need an IBAN to get a German phone number, you can choose a 'pay as you go' sim card which does not require this.
Yes, in some cases, if you would like to purchase a phone contract, you will be asked for an IBAN, but this is definitely not the case for all plans.

Good product, but annoying

This is a good product, but the update cycle is WAY too frequent. Every time I open the app it requires a new update. It’s massively hurting the usability of the app overall.

We completely understand that this can be an inconvenience, however from now onwards, there are much less updates required and you can use the app as normal 😊
