Awesome Pocket Beat Machine
This is probably the best traditional “drum machine” in the App Store. The UI is slick and intuitive, beautifully skeuomorphic. The discoverability is great, just tap the help button and all the features are highlighted. It comes with a bunch of great kits, including all the classic Roland machines, and the ability to make your own custom ones super easily. A song mode that actually makes sense! Loads of cool effects to modulate your sounds with, that can be applied per instrument. Now note that this is *not* a DAW, or a sampler, or a tool for making complete songs. If you try to compose solely in this tool you will be limited. This is a tool that does one thing and does it well. It’s like having the best of all the Roland drum machines and a couple neat synths and a sequencer in your pocket. And one purchase gets you iPad, iPhone, and Mac versions, all fully featured. With the price it’s at and no IAPs, this app is a steal.
I got this to fill in a rhythm section for live performance. For that purpose it should be absolutely perfect.
To fill in some of the missing details from the description: each “song” consists of a bank of patterns, all associated settings, and a track sequencer. You get 45 patterns per song, which should be plenty, although it seems like an arbitrary number. Songs can be an unlimited length of patterns AFAICT. Patterns can be up to 32 steps in length. Each step is 1/16th note, or 1/4 “beat”. Tempo goes from 30bpm to 300bpm. The synths have a 2 octave range, the bass synth centered around C3 and the lead centered around C6. The VCOs can be shifted up or down one octave. Also, the tracks CAN be renamed, although selecting a new kit won’t do it automatically. Go into the mixer and long-press on the track name.
Every pattern can be a different length, and even different instruments within the same pattern can have different lengths that loop around. So if you want to have a pattern where the snare plays every 5 beats but the kick plays every 4 beats, you can! However, there appears to be a bug or an oversight that switching the time signature to a higher divisor does not slow down the step rate. The divisor should indicate which note gets the beat. On most machines, you can set this to 2, 3, 4 or 6. Which allows each step in the sequencer to correspond to 1/32 notes, 1/18th notes, 1/16th notes, or 1/9th notes. Right now, no matter which “signature” you use, each step is 1/16th note. I really hope they fix this, bonus points if they could work in some other wacky divisors like 5 or 7.
Despite the presence of a “triplet” button, there are no true triplets available. (A true triplet is when 3 notes stretch over a space that would usually contain 4.) The “triplet” is in reality this app’s flam. Which oddly enough is not a true flam, which would have two beats. It would be nice to have real flams available though.
Songs can’t contain tempo changes, you get one tempo for the whole song, so if a song contains a tempo change you’ll have to make two separate songs and switch between them. (There is a MIDI mapping for “next song” so that’s a possible workaround.)
Finally, my list of requests for the devs: Fix time signatures so that the sequencer divides beats correctly. Add some more time signatures, particularly ones that use thirds. Add midi support for messages swapping to specific patterns, not just “next” and “previous”. Replace the “triplet” button with a proper flam function, variable length if possible. Give us a few more patterns, 45 is enough but even the cheap Behringer machines support 64.
Intuitive drum sequencing = lots of fun!
Really enjoying this drum machine app! It’s really easy to use and has plenty of interesting drum kits. The synth & bass modules are a bit limited especially the synth. The drum machine make up for it.
