Description

Barbecuing with charcoal is the only way to achieve that unbelievable succulent, tantalizing flavor. Whether you're cooking beef brisket, pork ribs, or chicken wings, the key ingredients to mastering delicious barbecue are the perfect mix of time and temperature. Conquering this slow cooking process allows the tough, chewy protein fibers in meat to break down and transform into incredibly tender barbecue. The problem is that charcoal is notoriously difficult to control and wild temperature fluctuations can result in tough, dried, or burnt meat. Powered by smart technology, the BBQ Guru temperature control devices easily avoid this disaster by remotely measuring the internal temperature of your foods and effortlessly maintaining the precise cooking temperature inside your grill. The revolutionary DynaQ and UltraQ controllers take outdoor cooking to the next level with the Guru Status Light Ring. At a glance, you can get visual feedback on the status of your cooking temperature and the operation of the control. In addition, you can use this app to monitor or update your BBQ Guru temperature control device via Bluetooth or WiFi to achieve perfect predictability and consistency with your cooks without needing to hover by the cooker. You can also setup email and text notifications, so you’ll always know the most up-to-date status of your BBQ. Whether you’re in your backyard playing with the kids, relaxing by the pool, or hanging out with friends and family, a quick check on your phone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi ensures your food is on target.

What’s New

Am a loyal customer, but this app needs help

I was so excited to get this for Father’s Day to upgrade my old device. My biggest issue was always trying to get my WiFi connection to work so I could monitor my cook when out of Bluetooth range. This app simply doesn’t work reliably. And the worst part is that with the new sleek ultraq design it is a total pain to make adjustments to your settings without the app. So somehow the whole experience is WORSE! Incredible.

The irony is that when I’ve got my pit going it is my time to sit back and relax. And instead I am screwing around with an unreliable interface all afternoon.

Hire an app designer and make your software as good and reliable as your awesome devices. Have some respect for your customers who are counting on a premium product when paying premium prices. Please!!!

Great Dashboard

I decided to finally add the UltraQ and wow was that a good decision. I downloaded the iPhone app and a quick firmware update later I was ready to start smoking a pork shoulder. I connected through Bluetooth at first and then connected via WiFi to monitor my cooks while away from my home. No issues at all and it maintained a consistent temperature during the initial 9-11 hours of cooking. I used this device for various cooks since and I have not been disappointed. While the display may be difficult to see during bright daylight, this is not an issue since I prefer the app and its dashboard as I rarely stand next to my cooker. When at the cooker the large display is very easy to read. Additionally, I like the color ring for quick viewing during he night, as I can see this from many of the windows in my home. This is great feedback as going about my nightly business and I can see simply by looking out a window.

As with all new capabilities and technology there is a learning curve for the user and an evolution of the product. But at this point the product and app meets my needs for consistent cooks with quality food via consistent temps.

Looks fancy but unreliable connection

Update: I sent an email to BBQ Guru and got a very quick response. Apparently the app doesn’t like both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on at the same time. They told me to connect to Wi-Fi and then select Disconnect from Bluetooth in the app. I did that and it is rock steady. It no longer drops Wi-Fi. I’m changing my review to 4 stars. Why not five? Because it’d been nice to know before I ruined a brisket. I was informed an iPhone app update is soon to be released. Hopefully it’ll address this. I have version 3.5.4.

I’ve got a brisket on as I type this. First cook with the UltraQ. The Wi-Fi connection has dropped off 3 time, temperature has dropped off twice and what should be a breeze per advertisement has become equivalent to babysitting a 2-year old. You never know quite what the errant child is going to do next. The temperature profile looks like the California crashing surf. No, the dampers are not to far open. The interface looks fancy but don’t waste your money.
