1912 年阿里山林業鐵路通車到二萬平，阿里山上的大量原木開始運下山。1913 年竣工的嘉義製材所，是日治時期日本政府佔地範圍最廣大的官營木材產業園區，負責貯存、加工阿里山上砍伐下山的木頭。因規模廣大且擁有當時歐美最先進的設施及技術，而有「東洋第一」的稱號。
