It was almost entirely a politically driven decision, not a humanitarian one.

I was under the impression that the Japanese were not prepared to surrender, and that a land invasion of Japan would have cost a LOT more lives from both sives, resulting in a lot more civilian deaths than dropping the two atomic bombs.

 

The death penalty is logically unsupportable.

In order to employ it, you must believe in several absolutes - the absolute certainty of evidence in context, the absolute veracity of witnesses, the absolute sanity of the accused, etc. etc.

Since the death penalty is absolute (by definition), and there is no way to amend the punishment due to errors discovered after it has been administered, it should never be employed by rational societies, period.

Love the emotion-based arguments for the death penalty, as there are no logic-based rebuttals available.

 

I don't think murderers should be just "executed."
They should be given a spot on "X-Factor" and then publicly killed when they get voted off.
