You have NO idea how I grew up. Trust me I know and understand poverty. We were actually homeless for a number a years when I was very young (for about 3 years, from the time I was 3 until I was 6) we lived in a car and in women's shelters after my mother left my abusive father in the middle of the night with no where to go.
We DID wear a condom, EVERY time, and it just happened to break. It happens. My son wasn't planned, but I'm grateful I have him. Accidents happen all the time. We BOTH worked VERY hard after my son was born, my ex husband always had a job, and as soon as I weened my son I went back to work myself, but the fact of the matter was that even with both of us working in the beginning we weren't making ends meet and we were getting by only because we were lucky enough to have family to live with who charged us minimal rent.
We were only on assistance for the first year and a half, we never got on it with the intention of staying on it, and we worked damn hard to make sure we never needed it again and the second we got our heads above water we canceled it out, and celebrated by cutting up our card and throwing it the fire place because we were NEVER going on it again and now nearly 6 years later we never have.
That is what public assistance programs are for. Not every one is lucky enough to never need help in life. We didn't abuse the system, we took ONLY what we needed and only when we absolutely needed it and then got back on our feet as soon as possible.
And newsflash darlin', not all people who move here ILLEGALLY work hard. I can't even tell you the number of families I know who are here illegally, and the husbands do nothing but drink all day and smoke on the front porch, while the moms keep popping out babies while they're on welfare. That is taking advantage of the system. When my son was born, we took the necessary precautions, and it just didn't work for us. But there is NO way in hell we would have kept having kids while on welfare, that's just the craziest thing I can think of. But I know a LOT of families, both legal and illegal citizens who do exactly that.

 

I should also add that we have no shame in being assistance for a year in a half because we have paid back into that system for the past 6 years and will continue to pay back into it with our tax money.
A maximum of $400 a month (sometimes less depending on how much we made because we were working the whole time we were on assistance and they deduct what you receive based on how much you earn) for a year and a half, adds up to at MOST $7,200. We never qualified for food stamps, and we only used the medical on the baby. So yeah, I feel pretty confident in say we've already paid back what we took out.

Section 8 ruined parts of my fucking area, not illegal immigrants, so I am more inclined to dislike people who went on "assistance" because they "weren't ready" when they had kids than immigrants coming to this country illegally. If the condom broke then I retract my statement. Still, the point is that you really don't know a fucking thing about the kind of poverty these people come from (and live in when they go to certain cities), and as much as you may like to bitch about illegal immigrants, your state and coast would not function without them.

In certain cities, kids who aren't white or black get bricks thrown at them, get cut for no reason, go through shit you can't even imagine and become hardened in a way you'll never know all because they wanted a better life. The less lucky ones live in the worst neighborhoods in these cities, places that nobody in their right mind would live in at this point. They see and experience things you couldn't personally imagine, things that are out of sight, out of mind to people who don't live there.

Maybe you've got more "lazy" immigrants over there but over here, if they're lazy they'll probably never make it out or even survive. They bring life to places that died and had the life sucked out of them by fads like the West Coast and Sunbelt and due to white flight and loss of industry.

Oh, and I know quite a few people who did that without any assistance who didn't come from shit. Then again, over here you can buy houses for well under 100,000 dollars and the cost of living isn't as ridiculous as it is over there.

I admit, I'm a bit biased, but you would be too if you saw what Section 8 did and still does to this area. It's our equivalent of your illegal immigration problem, except it's mostly pieces of shit whose families have been in this country legally for centuries and who don't care to do anything but be a drain on society and ruin neighborhoods.

This bothers me. I wonder why so many people here (in the US) are so heavily concerned about a matter that's truly not theirs (at least not to the extent they believe it to be)? People talk rather loosely & recklessly about this (likely because it's not really their problem). They serve easier-said-than-done bullshit as a solution (being desrespectful, all the while), but probably couldn't fathom being in those shoes. If you're from here, there's a good chance that you don't know about living in a lesser country. Some people come here as small children, & grow up here. Many of those people are better 'Americans' than most citizens, in theory(paying taxes & all). More than most go on with their lives & don't bother others.

If you're offended by illegals, why? Why do you care? I can understand the distaste for true criminals that commit crimes against other humans, & even those who commit lesser reckless crimes, but other than that, I don't see a true reason to care. You feel uncomfortable/like 'a minority in your own country'? Get the fuck over yourself; that could happen at any given time in the US. You'd be able to say the same if the said people were legal.
