Description
Welcome to a taste of early 1980s home computing.
This app focuses on the Sinclair ZX81 experience and is loaded with example software.
Background:
In 1980 the British company Science of Cambridge (later renamed Sinclair Research) released the Sinclair ZX80 home computer. The computer was developed with another technology company, Nine Tiles, and manufactured in a Timex Corporation factory in Dundee, Scotland. Followed in March 1981 by the even more popular successor, the Sinclair ZX81, both models had a profound impact on home and hobbyist computing in the UK and many other countries. Timex Corporation and Sinclair Research continued their joint venture and released the Timex Sinclair 1000 (TS1000) and 1500 (TS1500) variants of the ZX81 for the US market in July 1982 and July 1983 respectively.
Meanwhile, another iconic British home computer, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, was under development and hit the market in April 1982... but that's another story.
Special thanks to Nine Tiles for granting permission to include the ROM code, to which they retain the intellectual property rights after all these years.
Additionally, many thanks to all the developers of the loaded ZX81 software who have all granted permission to include their titles in the app. We hope this list of software will continue to grow in future updates.
What’s New

Ratings and Reviews
Love the app, but can I save programs?
This app is fantastic. I got my ZX81 Christmas 1982 and absolutely loved the journey it took me on. It was very scary how my fingers automatically moved to the right keys on the app decades later! I’ve really enjoyed coding some of the 1k programs I wrote years ago again, but can’t work out a way to save them. Is this possible? (It turns out that yes, it is 😃) *edited thanks to Kevin’s very helpful response to my query - I’m so glad that you can save programs and that I just hadn’t worked out how*
Developer Response ,
Thank you for your review! Glad that it invokes memories from that pivotal time in home computing.
Regarding saving: There is the save slots tab in the software section and the export option. If there is a desire to go old school then the tape save tone can be recorded or piped into a real device in conjunction with the MIC audio volume setting.
ZX81 - IOS An emulator for the ZX81 for your iPhone or iPad
The best emulation of a ZX81 on an iPhone or iPad. What more can I say.
I’ve been using this app now since December 2016.
The developer has since then expanded it with extra features and functionality.
Definitely recommended if you know and remember the Sinclair ZX81 from the 1980s.
The only downside is that due to the restrictions by Apple, unfortunately loading any game or software not included in the app is not possible (well, unless you want to type it in…).
However, the developer has done their best to get permission to include as many games as they can.
My opinion is that I recommend this to anyone who loves the little Zeddy.
Developer Response ,
Thank you for the sparing time to review this app and all your contributions to the Sinclair ZX80/ZX81 forums.
This app is stands firmly on the shoulders of many giants. Hopefully it is gratifying for contributors seeing their support/efforts live on in this platform.
There’s more to come with ongoing development for iPadOS multi-window support in a future version.
Brilliant and faithful emulator
As an original school boy user this is brings back memories. Being more interested in programming the emulator looks and feels like the real thing but this is so much easier than pulling the original out of the loft and connecting it. Move over all recent programming / project modules, this works “straight out of the box”
Developer Response ,
Many thanks for such a positive review! You are the epitome of the target user. Although importing external code binary files from outside the app would contravene App Store developer guidelines, perhaps in the future functionality will be added to allow you to export your efforts for desktop emulators or real ZX80/81 devices.
