WireGuard 4+

Having been intrigued by WireGuard and following its progress for quite a while, and having tested it on my Linux boxes at home and in the cloud and being thoroughly impressed, I jumped at the chance to try out its beta when it was first released on iOS. Now it’s in the official AppStore too, I can’t recommend this VPN app highly enough. I was using OpenVPN before, but I always experienced problems when waking up my devices from sleep and getting the VPN to reconnect. WireGuard has been as solid as a rock in that regard. Waking it up from sleep and the VPN connection is just there, stateless, but ready for packets. Awesome stuff! I do occasionally have to reset the VPN connection after switching WiFi networks or going from WiFi to Mobile Data / vice-versa, but it isn’t every time, only occasionally, and it is easily done with just a quick flick of the toggle from on to off and back again. Speeds are really great. WireGuard is definitely the future of VPNs. Great work :)

Thanks so much Jason for creating the WireGuard protocol. The iOS app has been flawless and the simplicity of WireGuard makes setting up tunnels and peers so quick and easy. Can’t wait to see it in the FreeBSD kernel and hopefully in pfSense. I love your work and I follow your progress on zx2c4. You’re really doing an amazing job. I can’t wait to see how well it gets adopted over time, I can really see it overtaking OpenVPN and IPSec over the next few years.

I liked how easy it was to set up, and I really like the on-demand feature. It’s a massive battery hog on my iPhone SE 2022 though.

I’ve got it on on-demand mode so it switches on for 4G and off for WiFi. I was on 4G all day yesterday for the first time since installing WireGuard and iOS shows it as having used 40% of my battery and the next highest app is 20% in the last 24 hours. Looking at the last 7 days when I was on WiFi almost continuously (meaning WireGuard should have been inactive), WireGuard is still top of the list, but only at 22% when the next highest app is 18%.
