Ratings and Reviews
Good content, rubbish app
As the title suggests, the content is good, the app on the other hand is underwhelming - slow, buggy, doesn't remember where you left off, etc.
***
As of 28 September, the app is worse than ever: (1) some magazines don’t download, the current one has been stuck on “processing” for an hour; (2) the magazines that do download delete themselves every time I close down the app, so I have to re-download a magazine every time I open it; (3) the lack of bookmark functionality is also frustrating, though irrelevant as I’m constantly downloading new magazines; and (4) the app hasn’t been updated to reflect the new iPhone screen size, so it’s really unattractive to read (if it works).
IT support are pretty unhelpful. I’ve been going back and forth with them regarding (2), and they said it was down to my storage (I had plenty) and/or a limit on magazine numbers (the limit was removed and made no difference).
It rather frustrating to have a paper and digital subscription when you only have access to one form of media, which isn’t at all helpful if you travel regularly.
It would be great if we could just log-on to a password protected section of the Week website and download a PDF of the current magazine. That would save the torture of trying to use this app.
Terrible app
I have been reading The Week for over a couple of years now. I relied on it to hopefully receive frequent unbiased news. For a year now, it has been almost impossible to read any content unless I am connected to the internet. This is despite the fact that the option provided to read ‘downloaded’ content means I should be able to read through the content anywhere without a signal. It doesn’t work. It hasn’t worked for a while despite me sending emails to the creators to try & get the problem fixed. The creators of the app just don’t care.
Now the app has been given an update & it is an absolute headache to use. It’s been turned from a fairly clean & concise layout to pages of mess everywhere. I have perfect vision but even I have to pinch & zoom in to read anything properly. The text is so small & crammed so tightly onto every page, I no longer take any pleasure in using The Week for my news feed. There are also adverts now as well. Every few pages, adverts after adverts! How boring & what a total sell out. So, well done to the creators of this app. You’ve turned something that was fairly well designed, easy to use into something that is messy, cheap looking & irritating. Idiots. I am now unsubscribing.
Usability of app getting worse with each update
I love reading the week, and the app used to work fine. However since the latest update I’ve decided to cancel my subscription and delete the app. It would now be more convenient to get the physical magazine (which isn’t convenient enough for me to follow through with doing) than struggle with this app. The latest update has rendered the content unreadable on a mobile device - where as it used to be optimised. If I want to read this issue I’m going to have to see if it’s any better on a tablet - although my tablet doesn’t have a SIM, it’s WiFi only, and a previous update stopped content downloading properly, so now this app only works properly with internet connection. This means it will be difficult to read when out and about. Other recent updates have changed the navigation for the worse and made the app buggy, it no longers remembers your place, and is no longer readable on journeys without WiFi. What is the developer doing?! If they are trying to lose the publication subscribers then they are succeeding
