What’s New

Version 11.5

A new look for the Guardian Editions app

By Monday 16 December, the Guardian Editions app will look a little bit different as we change the way we produce it to deliver an experience closer to that of our printed journalism. The current version of the Editions app will no longer be supported after this date. You don't need to install a new app, simply update your existing app to enjoy the new experience.

Subscribers will have access to PDF editions of the Guardian and Observer each day, with new editions available a few hours earlier than before. Editions can still be downloaded for offline reading, and the pages will mirror the creative design of our UK print editions. We are also offering a larger archive of past editions that will exceed the 30 days currently available. For crossword lovers, our daily, ad-free crosswords will remain playable in-app.

In addition, readers will be able to experience our beautiful print magazines and newspaper layouts in their intended format. With our “article view” feature, readers can click on any newspaper article and open it in an easy-to-read accessible view. This feature will also be available on our magazines and supplements early next year.

To get the new version of Guardian Editions on iOS, simply update the existing app via your mobile or tablet’s app store from 16 December. You don’t need to download a new app. You may need to update your operating system to ensure you are running iOS 16.0 or later.

If you need any help with the new version of Guardian Editions, please take a minute to read our FAQs in our help centre, where you can find further information and assistance:

We hope you continue to enjoy your experience of the Guardian and our journalism, and we thank you for your ongoing support.

Mostly a convenient way to enjoy The Guardian, some weaknesses

Use of this app comes as an extra with a subscription to the print edition: very handy, and not only when we’re away. But there are some problems I’d like to see addressed.
One is that the editorial content is not the same as the print edition. Sometimes an article in the app has extra verbiage that has been culled in print. And at least once I’ve seen an article I the app that was missing crucial details present in the printed text making nonsense of the (identical) headline. It would really suit me better if the app just reproduced the print version precisely.
It’s great having the crosswords available in the app. Two small things could improve that. First, keep the time visible while solving. It disappears as soon as you type something and some of us need reminding when we should be off to do something else. Second, the clues and the grid used to scroll separately, which was easier.

Awful, backward leaning new design!!!

My fears have come true. Your new ‘updated version’ of the Guardian Editons app is merely a ‘PDF’ version of the paper! I have subscribed to editions for over ten years and love the ease that I can browse through your high quality daily news stories and with ease in digitally intuitive, easy to read article. It was so easily navigable to find the stories that interested me. I thought a clearly thought out, major update to the app would at least have some digitially intuitive actions for the digital user - clear icons to zoom in on stories to easily read for example - not aimlessly splaying fingers around to even be able to read the text in each article. The thought of it even brings on a headache! This makes me so sad because I love reading my Guardian editions each day but I’m not up to scrolling around a tiny PDF, heavily detailed screen, trying to find the stories I am interested in. I can only imagine the app developers have been coerced into this and my only hope is that my thoughts align to everyone else’s and the app will once again update. For now, I guess it is goodbye from me :(

Love the app but needs to be less buggy

I read the guardian almost every day on this app, as I have a subscription.

I like it and it’s well laid out, but there are multiple bugs:
- though I have background app refresh turned on, the app does not update the paper each day so I have to force close it and restart it to get today’s paper.
- It also does not seem to download the paper fully onto my device. it needs a strong wifi connection to load all articles, sometimes I just get blank pink boxes rather than the article, so when I’m out and about I need to use data to load it
- the share article button only shows on some articles, and when I go on the other guardian app it can be difficult to find the same article to share it
- the text is often changing its size and font mid-article, which can be annoying.

I’ve given the app four stars because I think the Guardian is great and the app is cool. However, the Guardian should invest more in its app to make it a five-star experience.
