Speakly: Learn Languages Fast 4+

I really like this app for so many reasons but one thing that really annoys me is that when new words are introduced it is often in the context of a whole sentence and while the new word(s) to be learned are translated the rest of the sentence isn’t, even though sometimes the rest of the sentence contains other unfamiliar words. This seems to me to be somewhat pointless, because not only would it make the new word(a) easier to learn in proper context but also I might happen to learn a couple of extra new words along the way if I only knew what they meant..! I end up typing them individually into a translator app sometimes just so that I can understand the phrase each time I see it but it would be so much simpler if I was shown the translation of every word in the new sentence, and not just the word or two that I’m ‘supposed’ to be learning. Other than that I would have given 5* because this app is the best language app I’ve come across so far.

I’ve used a few language apps, it’s good to diversify apps to advance quicker in your target language. I use Speakly for picking up new vocabulary. The app is really easy to use, and by showing you new words *in context* it really helps you improve your vocabulary as well as when you should use your vocabulary. Plus I think the Live Situations and Listening Exercises help make Speakly something to be used by people who really are serious about acquiring a new language.

That being said, the bugs man... I say bugs, really it’s just one. The app will get stuck several times during a session and I’ll typically have to close and restart the app 5-10 times just to learn my new daily words.

It’s been like this for a while, and I’m not the only review to have mentioned it, so Speakly have been aware of it for over a month. I know nothing about coding and appreciate that there are people working hard to sort this out. But it’s been going on for a while and it really hurts the user experience, particularly when this app has so many good things going for it.

I’ve been using Speakly only almost every day to learn Russian lately. It has helped me a lot in acquiring new words and I think the concept of the app is wonderful.

However, when I choose to use “Multiple choice mode” only, I am still asked to write and even then it seems that the “skip” button doesn’t work properly. So I sometimes end up having to press skip 20 or more times to get to the next word in multiple choice mode. It’s sort of exhausting, and I’ve thought switching to another learning method many times because of the glitches I encounter.

Again, it’s an amazing app but I think that there is room for improvement, and I hope that the development team is going to address these issues soon.

In the Study Area we learn vocabulary through writing, speaking and memorize cards. The multiple choice mode applies to memorize cards, but the app presents other write exercises nevertheless (such as "write cards"). We will add an option to turn them off in the future :)
