Description
Salome is a tool for recording (or importing) sounds, turning them into seamless loops, and then polyphonically play them using MPE or MIDI.
CONTROL: The onscreen keypads can be latched, turning them into 2-dimensional faders for controlling various modulations. Additionally, software and hardware MPE controllers can be used (or normal MIDI, in a pinch).
WORKFLOW: The entire process from sampling to playing was designed to be a fast and fluid as possible. Speed > features.
UNIVERSAL: AUv3 plugins for iOS (iPhone, iPad) and MacOS (ARM, Intel) are included*.
- Full Audio Unit compatibility (note that not all hosts support all AU features)
- Built-in MPE keypads for multidimensional onscreen control
- MPE/MIDI input and output from the Audio Unit, so you can record your performance or even control other MPE synths
- 12 mode filter, based on the Oberheim Xpander design
- Latch-mode lets you play the instrument using faders
- Basic standalone mode included (for connectivity use the AU plugin)
- Record or import sounds (WAV, AIF, MP3) and instantly play them as a polyphonic instrument
- Effortless seamless loops using the non-destructive X-Fade feature

* not all MacOS DAWs fully support Audio Unit plugins. This is not a VST plugin.

Ratings and Reviews
A very useful tool
There are any number of looping apps, some vastly complex others very simple. All have their niche, and qualities. Salome, sits somewhere in the middle. Brambos has cracked the nut of being easy to use, but also quite versatile. Salome is very, very handy for easily recording new instruments, which can then be loaded in another instance of the app as instruments. Played either live or via another app, such as the excellent Piano Motifs.
Instant reaction - cor blimey guvnor this is superb
Literally only played it for a few minutes, so not an expert take - but immediately I’m able to play in sounds and then manipulate them in a very open playable way - just using the screen, not an external mpc controller.
My brain often trips up on lots of these kinds of apps, but this is quite different and very musical. Top.
Good, but a few things could make it better
Great for grabbing audio and creating a playable instrument, but no time-stretching option makes it very limited.
The addition of a tempo-aligned grid, or time-stretching would allow us to play rhythmic samples in time at any pitch - but at present any rhythm content goes completely out of sync.
Also I have a lot of issues with stuck MIDI notes when sequencing from another app. The ‘panic’ button is in constant use!
No buyer’s remorse as it’s great for basic sample playing and soundscapes, but sync and time-stretching options would make it much more usable.
