Description
SEB 3.4 is fully compatible with iOS 18, allows to use the new optional screen proctoring feature and additional apps in exams on iPadOS 18.
SafeExamBrowser (SEB) is a secure kiosk web browser environment used to carry out e-assessments that run on exam servers. SEB opens a web browser without an address and search bar, loads a pre-configured webpage and locks an iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch) into a single app kiosk mode. This mode prevents students from switching to other apps, accessing websites and communicating with other students during an exam. SEB enables secure exams on unmanaged iOS devices like students' own iPads as well as on iOS devices owned and managed by an institution. SEB doesn't use a centralized server or cloud service; it can be configured with an API, configuration files, links and QR codes. It can be used with most web-based quiz and e-assessment systems. For improved security and usability, some exam systems provide additional built-in support for SEB. Currently, SEB integrates especially well with learning management systems (LMS) such as Moodle, ILIAS, OpenOLAT and with several non-commercial and commercial exam systems, such as Inspera Assessment, Dugga, Exam.net or EvaExam.
SEB uses one of the single app modes provided by iOS. After an exam is submitted, SEB can automatically end the app self-lock kiosk mode (an exam invigilator could also use a quit password to end the SEB exam session and unlock the device if necessary).
SEB features an optional Dock displaying buttons for various commands. Instead or in addition, a left slider menu shows a list of open browser tabs and commands which can be used to (if enabled in settings) quit an exam session, jump back to the start page of an exam, reload a web page, and navigate back/forward in the browsing history.
SEB for iOS uses the same format for encrypted .seb configuration files as the SEB versions for other platforms. Those config files allow to individually configure SEB to display the start page of an exam system or an exam portal page with a list of links to current exams. If SEB for iOS is installed using a mobile device management (MDM) system, its initial configuration can easily be deployed using the "MDM Managed Configuration" feature. You can also directly start an exam with an individual configuration in SEB for iOS using a special config hyperlink. This link can be opened by examinees from Safari, Mail or a messenger app. In addition, you can use QR codes containing SEB links or even full, individual configurations. An exam can directly be started in SEB by using the iOS Camera app or the built-in QR code scanner.
SEB also works together with Apple Classroom, teachers can start individually configured exams on all student devices. See https://safeexambrowser.org/ios for more information.

What’s New
Version 3.4
• Now running on iOS 18 without having to use special setting.
• Added the optional feature Screen Proctoring (which requires to run your own instance of SEB Server and the SEB Screen Proctoring feature).
• Support for AAC Multi-App Mode starting iPadOS 18. This allows to use additional apps running alongside SEB in exams.
• You can add/edit which apps should be available in an exam session along with SEB in its in-app settings in the Additional Apps section.
• You need to enter the Bundle ID in the Identifier field. See this page to find out the Bundle ID of any iOS app:
https://forums.ivanti.com/s/article/How-to-find-Bundle-ID-of-any-iOS-App?language=en_US
• Removed support and settings for classic WebView (UIWebView), as it isn't supported anymore in iOS/iPadOS 18 and newer.
• Updated deprecation warning: "Classic WebView (UIWebView) is no longer supported on iOS/iPadOS! The used SEB assessment solution integration/settings might no longer work and need to be updated to support the modern WebView. Contact the vendor of your assessment solution or your exam provider."
• Improvement of user ID resolution resp. handshake completion with the optional SEB-Server:
Now generic exam systems are supported with SEB Server.
• Fixed a security issue with a shortcut.
• Fixed issue when "Exam Session Finished" was unnecessarily displayed.
• Fixed: Prompting web microphone access permissions was not working correctly in some cases.
• Added the new version of the AAC Assessment mode to iOS version. This can optionally be deactivated with new setting Security / Use Modern AAC API.
• Now injecting ConfigKey/BrowserExamKey into all iFrames when using the modern WebView. You should use the SEB JS API function
void SafeExamBrowser.security.updateKeys(function callback) to support this.
Ratings and Reviews
Safe exam browser has locked my iPad
Hi, I’m struggling to work safe exam browser. I logged in successfully but then I couldn’t use the quit password and my iPad was locked. I then restarted my iPad to get out of safe exam browser. However, when I tried to log back in the screen went red and says it’s locked and won’t let me use the correct quit password. I’m not sure what to do. Thank you
Doesn’t work with some web forms
The Microsoft web form loads ok in safari, but in safe exam browser, the form never completes loading.
Developer Response ,
Thank you for your review. You were right, in former versions of SEB Microsoft Forms didn't work anymore, because of changes Microsoft made. Since the version SEB 3.0 (where we support the latest WebKit browser engine which Safari uses), Forms should work again with SEB.
