Description
If you could design the most perfect social network, what would it look like? We asked this and landed on Retro, a new social app that feels like a breath of fresh air.
Retro is a weekly photo journal that (1) brings you closer to the people you actually care about and (2) helps you appreciate your own life - all without hijacking your time and attention.
So dust off those photos that are just sitting in your camera roll and spread some joy in the world.
Say hi to us at founders@retro.app
And if you’re still reading, here are some reasons to try Retro:
- EASY TO START: Start by choosing photos you’ve already taken and backfill the weeks on your profile with the photos and videos you want to remember.
- NO PRESSURE: Everything was designed with your comfort in mind. Your friend list is private. Likes on your posts are private. No captions required. Update any part of your profile anytime.
- PRINT & SHIP POSTCARDS: Spread some joy through snail mail by printing your photo as a high quality postcard and sending it to anyone in the world via USPS first class. Free for now.
- MONTHLY RECAPS: Create a beautiful photo collage or video slideshow from the photos you’ve shared from the week, month, or year. Then share via text or Instagram in a tap.
- GROUP ALBUMS: Start a private album and drop the link in your group chat to collect and share photos after events. Perfect for parties, projects, friends, parents, and couples.
- GROUP MESSAGING: Retro is now an all-in-one home for groups large and small, with the ability to share photos, videos, and notes privately in Albums and start group chats in Messages.
- HOME SCREEN WIDGETS: See the newest posts from friends or time hop back to your own memories with our new widgets.
This is the app we wanted for our family and friends, and we’re so excited to share it with you. We hope you love it.

Ratings and Reviews
Extremely promising
I love the idea behind this app. I’m actually quite anti-social media, effectively eschewing Instagram for a while and never seeing the apparently transformative power of BeReal. BeReal effectively forces you to document and share your life in a certain way. “At this exact time! If you don’t we’ll make it clear to your friends that you cheated by waiting for when you were doing something interesting.” Retro on the other hand puts you in control. It basically says ‘you will do something or see something worth sharing every week and when you do share it here’. Basically it’s a more laid back version of BeReal and one I think encourages more sharing as there’s less pressure.
Design of the app is beautiful.
I really hope it takes off and can be monetised sustainably, whilst keeping the private, friends-only, ad-free feel it has at the moment. I for one would be prepared to pay a subscription for this ethos to continue.
Creative and fun
This app not only lets you upload your weeks for the year showing what you did, who you were with, what you got up to etc. this app also allows you to connect with your friends in a way that’s different to most social media apps these days. It’s by far my favourite social app, and even allows a few post cards to be sent out, you design and write them, and they create, and post them 😁
Love the app, hate the location tracking
I’m really hoping for a fix to the details of location attached automatically to my photos. The app is beautiful and I can see myself using it a lot, but privacy is important to me and when I post photos from home, I don’t want my home address listed (which is quite specific down to the name of my estate) - I know the app is just for people you let see your photos, but if I ever wanted to share it with my wider circle beyond family and closest friends, this would hold me back
There’s a function to turn off ‘neighborhood captions’ but it doesn’t seem to have worked, and still lists the location of my latest photo on my profile. Pls help!
