Description

Play the old English card game of Nap

Nap (or Napoleon) Whist is a trick-taking game where players receive five cards each and must bid to choose trumps and win tricks. There are many variations to Nap so here is a quick summary of this one:

The deck contains two jokers, the actual size of the deck depends on the number of players:
Four Players: A-K-Q-J-10-9 of each suit plus two jokers = twenty six in total, twenty two will be used in each round with four ‘sleeping’ in the deck
Five Players: A-K-Q-J-10-9-8 of each suit plus two jokers = thirty in total, twenty seven will be used in each round with three ‘sleeping’ in the deck
Six Players: A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7 of each suit plus two jokers = thirty four in total, thirty will be used in each round with two ‘sleeping’ in the deck

After the cards are dealt the top card on the deck is shown face up

Players bid for the right to choose trumps and lead. The minimum bid is Nap (winning all five tricks) rising to x2, x3 etc. which increases the stakes.

After bidding the highest bidder (the leader) takes the top card plus the (unknown) card beneath, makes the best hand of five possible and throws the two surplus cards back to the deck. If there are no bids at all then the stakes are doubled in the next hand.

Trumps are chosen by the first card played by the leader
The leader can play a joker as any card not within their hand and not already played – a led joker ‘calls’ out the corresponding card if held by any other player.

Players play for points.

Full rules are available within the App.

Supports solo play and multi-player games against with friends or strangers!

Good game

Have enjoyed playing this game, I’m used to playing without jokers but easy enough to play with them.

Hand sequence

Hi you need to be able to see the sequence of cards laid by each player - when defending this is essential as players signal the content of their hand by the sequence they play cards - without being able to see that sequence a fundamental subtlety of the game is lost - anyway well done for putting a nap app there I was surprised to find one to be honest

Developer Response ,

Hi, thanks for the feedback. The way we always played was that each player keeps track of the cards as they are played, thus each player needs to keep track of what has gone in order to defend.
I was actually surprised there was no Nap app at all, and that's why I decided to put one out there.

Good But ………

Napoleon is an excellent Card Game. I’ve played it for years. This App Version whilst enjoyable falls a tad short on authenticity of the real game.

Firstly

There are far to many “ stonewalled hands “ particularly to the Robot Competitors ! Way to many in fact 👍

Secondly

There is excessive “ over bidding “ again particularly by the Robots and I include
“ Barbara “ who is anything but “ assured “ she and the other Robots constantly “ overbid “ despite not having a suitable “ hand “ with which to bid !

Thirdly

The use of Jokers is also questionable this was never a feature of the original game Napoleon. These should be replaced by an extra
Card of lower value.

Fourthly

The Robots clearly haven’t a clue when it comes to an end game which is evident by the amount of times these Robots end up with a card of similar suit. In the real Nap each player should be striving to retain the last card in a different suit to prevent a player from being successful in obtaining all
“ five tricks “

Fifthly

There should be “ points “ deducted for failure to win the desired 5 Tricks. This would also deter speculative “ bidding “ with a poor hand ! that has absolutely No Chance of succeeding ! all the Robots are guilty of this tactic. Two of them frequently over bid obviously to prevent falling far behind in Points.

Perhaps it’s not possible to change the current format ( I’m not a tech wiz )
As it is , it’s still enjoyable to play ( even though the Robots cheat ! and Do Not Follow the “ cards “ at critical moments ! but perhaps it needs some tinkering ( that’s a Cornish word 😉👌 )

Napoleon was my favourite Card game, I played for money with a regular school of players. It actually requires considerable Skill ! unlike Poker and Blackjack which is purely based on how deep your pockets are.

I don’t wish to be overtly critical of your efforts to bring this wonderful game to the to the iPhone which is definitely the “ smartest “ mobile device available but I respectfully suggest you have a
re~think on how you can make this particular Card Game far more realistic 👍

Regardless of my comments above, I will of course still enjoy your version and congratulations for bringing Napoleon to the App Store 👍

Kind Regards.
