Poor - unless you have a new phone and good signal

Great idea and when it works it’s sort of OK. Forget it if you’re in a weak reception area (like most of RHS Hyde Hall); the app just hangs and there’s no ‘back’ button to get out to a homepage, you have to kill the app and reopen it. Beware - some of the AR features don’t work on older phones (such as the hand-me-downs that younger children might have), so in our case big sister was able to see some of the features that younger sister couldn’t. There’s also very little help or guidance in the app so it takes some prodding around to find some of the fun things in there and that’s not the point when visiting a garden and trying to follow a trail. Other than that it’s great fun when working and has some innovative features, such as stacking insect poo (likely to be a hit with most kids!). Needs better development and testing before release.

Since this trail completed last summer and we have made some fixes and tweaks to enhance and optimise the app. However due to the nature of the AR technology the device used does need to be above a certain specification. It has been optimised for Apple officially supported devices running iOS 16 and later (see iPhone models compatible with iOS 16 – Apple Support (UK). However the app should still work on devices from iPhone 8 and iPad 2017 onwards as long as they are running iOS 15 or above.

Disappointing — when it worked 🙁

When it did work, the bug flew away most of the time. However, for the first time in years, my phone locked up. Couldn’t use the app, switch apps nor sleep phone (original iPhone SE). Had to force restart it.

So the developer response, 10 months later, is basically to blame me for using their app on a phone that’s not powerful enough - without putting that requirement in the “Works on this iPhone” section here.
It still says Requires iOS 15 and iPhone SE 1st Gen.

However the app should still work on devices from iPhone 8 and iPad 2017 onwards as long as they are running iOS 15 or above. Lack of phone memory can also affect the performance of the app.
