Description

ID700 is a hybrid FM/waveshaping software synthesizer based on the voice architecture of the Buchla 700.

ID700 runs in standalone mode and as an AUv3 plugin (Logic Pro, GarageBand, AUM, Cubasis 3).

HISTORY
In 1987 Don Buchla released the Buchla 700 synthesizer. It was the next logical step from Don's previous digital synths (the Buchla 400, Touché, Buchla 500) but was also influenced by the synth trends of the 1980's, specifically FM synthesis and the all-in-one workstation concept. As usual, Don was ahead of the curve and the 700 never took off. Very few were sold and even fewer functioning units exist today. I always loved the sound of Don's digital oscillators, and combined with the scarcity of the instrument it seemed like a fun project to recreate it in software and reintroduce its concepts to the world.

A really unique & special synthesiser! 🐇 🕳

Don Buchla’s creations are still enshrouded in mystery (even to this day) due to their inherent complexity to tame (compared to vanilla subtractive) and subsequent broad and diverse sonic characteristics (which are unique to his individual approach) and the ID700 brings this beautiful slice of technological history into the year 2021 (and it sounds astounding)! It’s so much fun to explore, and there’s so many possibilities for generating unique sonic textures, colours and forms that evolve, slide and glide that naturally I fell in love with it immediately! I really like the GUI and design too, as it’s very unique, logical and intuitive. If you love synthesis you basically owe it to yourself to dive into this rabbit hole (follow the white rabbit) and learn it’s weirding ways ASAP!

Ticks all the boxes

If I had the knowledge to bullet-point all the things I’d want in an IOS synth, the ID700 would be it! This is my kind of synth, creating the music I really love: long, complex, evolving soundscapes with practically infinite tweak-ability. Some of the presets are mind-blowing. The chain of combinations means you could spend the rest of your life creating interesting sounds. The developer has created something really special and I have the feeling that this is just the beginning with updates and enhancements.

Goodness alone knows what sounds I’ll be able to create through AUM with my array of effects and sequencers.

Mind totally blown!

Excellent so far with some annoyances

First of all it sounds brilliant. However if you suffer from visual impairment its far, far too dark. I have to have my ipad brightness up full meaning that theres no way it can be used with aum or other apps.
Id like the devs to rethink the interface and give options for different colour schemes including impaired users.
The ability to have certain sections become bigger for finer control would be a great help too- particularly the envelopes and harmonics sections.
