Description

The Guitar Note Trainer is an app to help you learn the notes on the guitar neck - one of the most essential skills for progressing guitarists!

It has four training modes, Name The Note where you have to name the note shown on the neck, Find A Note where you have to find a given note on the neck in all 6 positions, Memory Quiz 1 where you have to name a note having been given it's position, and Memory Quiz 2 where you must name all the notes across a given fret (a tough one!!).

There are some "Easy" options for those just starting out to limit your range of answers.

You also have an audio option to hear the notes as you select them!

If you really need to cheat you can swipe your finger diagonally across the fretboard and all the notes will show for a second :)

I'm sure you'll find this app very helpful, all you need to add is practice time!

Best wishes, Justin

What’s New

Version 2.17

We've added a reference fretboard section to the app to show you all the notes on the fretboard for revision. We've also added options to allow you to choose which strings and which notes (whole notes only or all notes) are tested in the training modes. We've also updated the screen layouts so that they fit better on X style screens.

Please keep telling us what you think about the app and how we can improve it.

Super slick app and so effective

I’ve put off learning the notes properly for 18 years so decided it’s definitely time to do something about that. Until now I had to work it out relative to the 6th string which is all I’d bothered to learn which takes far too long. Justin’s website and videos are so clear and effective (particularly the theory) that I thought I’d give his apps a go.

Verdict - I’ve made more progress in one evening with this app than weeks of looking at diagrams. Don’t forget to check out the reference fretboard hidden away in the menu. I reckon it’s the most useful feature as you can choose which note you want to see and it shows you the pattern on the fretboard with no others confusing the issue. The different tests are a great way of proving you don’t know it properly yet and to go back to the reference chart. You might think you’ve got the hang of it with one test but the other trips you up.

I think 5 minutes a day on this and massive progress will be made in no time.

Weirdly addictive!

As Justin bangs on on his videos about learning the notes on the neck I thought I’d give this a go... and so far I’m quite impressed.
Of course you’ll only get out of it what you’re prepared to put in but if you make the effort then this little app becomes quite addictive to play. You can feel yourself getting better and better after a short time but when you try the quizzes you realise more practise is needed!
After watching many Justin videos I really didn’t mind paying for it either so overall I’m very pleased having purchased this app.
Some improvements I’d like to see is having different note sounds so actual guitar sounds (clean and distorted) in addition to piano. I’d also like to see the option on Name the Note for the blue dots to quickly fade away instead of staying visible like the red wrong notes do as I’m finding I’m using the pattern now instead of learning the notes individually on the strings.

PLEASEEEE ADD COLOURED NOTES!!!!!!

I love this app, one suggestion I would absolutely love to see which could really help beginners is assigning each note with an individual colour. For instance when using the name the note feature, you could assign say the colour red to F and therefore when it comes up you on your fretboard you know it’s a F without even thinking. After a while you could turn off coloured notes and it should have made it clearer in your mind due to your brain remembering where the colour was on the fretboard and what note it represents. I really hope this makes as much sense to you as it does to me cause I really think it could be beneficial as I know it would definitely help me out. Overall, although it’s sounds like I’m complaining😂, this app if fantastic!! Made more progress with this then anything else I found so far. Thank you Justin for literally making me the guitar player I am.
