Gener8 - Earn From Your Data 4+

I, like a fair chunk of gener8 users stumbled across the service through one of Sam’s viral moments. I was stunned at first to realise such a concept could exist and I kept looking for a reason for it to be too good to be true.

The app itself and the browser (for PC) are both completely flawless with features that will benefit both you as a consumer and your general browsing experience.

The single issue I have with Gener8 is the rewards. A lot of them are not exactly what I was expecting and the ones that do pose any sort of interest to me such as gift cards and things like that are never available for me. This is however as mentioned the only problem with the product I have. Every other thing is completely perfect, so much that it’s still worth the whole 5 starts from me :)

The idea is sound: get some value from your data rather than letting all the benefits go to retailers and advertisers.

Unfortunately, Gener8 doesn’t really live up to this promise. In return for handing over your data to them, what you mostly get is a bunch of promotional offers/trials for products and subscription services (“first month free”, “50% off your first month” etc.) that you could get many other ways, often just by Googling. The few actual tangible rewards, such as gift cards, are issued in such limited quantities and at specific times of the week that very unlikely to be able to get them unless you’re on the app on the dot when they’re released, and you get lucky. The one that made me realise it really wasn’t worth it was a £10 Xbox gift card, being released later in the week. The quantity available…? Two. Yes, just two.

I’ll consider returning if they can come up with rewards actually worth my time and information. Until then, sorry Gener8 - you’re not offering enough to keep me.

Honestly pleasantly surprised by this app! A co worker of mine was telling me about how he had recently downloaded the app. Explaining how the rewards worked, what information is used and for what reason… obviously the small part of my brain, that is reserved for hesitation kicked in. After a few weeks my co worker and I was discussing it again and he then began to show me how he had earned rewards etc.

Then I decided to have a look myself, read reviews, personal and professional. Looked into how the information is stored and processed. And I was shocked when I discovered just how other websites where using all my information to profit. So, why shouldn’t I get my share of it too?

Admittedly, the rewards aren’t going to blow your socks off, but some have actually come in pretty handy. And the cost of the rewards is minuscule to what I had expected. My only complaint would have to be the gift card options. There are only a set amount available, so the chances of getting the one you want is very slim.

You can also use your points to ‘bid’ on items, which I actually love.

Bottom line, just get this app! It literally looks after itself and you don’t have to do a single thing. Except to log in, see how many points you’ve earned. Through literally using your phone in no other way as you usually would!!!
