Forget Goodreads

I’ve been a Goodreads user for years and have always stuck by it despite the one obvious issue… it’s outdated. Goodreads looks and feels like 200.9. I’ve been desperate for an app that is the modern day version of Goodreads, enter Fable. Fable has created a modern looking reading tracker that offers you the chance to do more in depth reviews with half stars and even emojis to express how you feel about the book, a space to join a book club and read with your new friends and even a cute social media page where you can find your reading stats goals and a mini horoscope like description of what you like to read. So overall, I’ve abandoned Goodreads and I’m switching entirely to Fable. This is the app I have desired for years.

Some improvements needed

I love the idea of the app and I‘ll probably keep using it but some features really need improvement: 1. I‘ve been getting random notifications about ebooks being available and if I accidentally click on them, the app becomes unusable for minutes (!) while it tries to download the book (not even restarting the app helps) 2. in-app notifications often don‘t go away even after clicking on them 3. it takes too many steps to update the reading progress on a book: clicking the menu button, clicking update progress, having to delete the existing progress before entering a new number because that doesn’t happen automatically. Other reading trackers make that so much more user-friendly (1-2 clicks rather than 4) 4. you can‘t switch between different editions of books like you can on GoodReads or StoryGraph

On the plus side: I really do love the book club feature and the focus on community on fable. I also really like the book review flow which allows you to pick from a pre-configured list of categories what applied to the book

All about books!

I have deactivated all social media earlier this year. Completely done with glancing into lives of people who pretended to have a better life than reality. When I got introduced to Fable I was hesitant, because social media all about books and like minded book friends? Is that even possible? The answer is, yes! And I love it! Love the enthusiasm of fellow readers when talking about their reads. Love the reviews of books read. Love the recommendations given and I absolutely love the community that is all about books! So as long as the view stays like it’s now (on books and the community), I will keep using the app.
