Here is my personal review of Enjoy Town.

I think this is a fun concept but it feels like it’s a huge money grab for the most part. I understand that API’s and AI models can be expensive to run. Firstly, I wish there was more to add when creating a character, as I feel they can be a bit one-dimensional and get boring quick because there isn’t a whole lot you can write about them. It would be good if there was an option to provide examples of how they talk rather than just saying what their conversation style is.

I think it’s a bit ridiculous too that on subscription, the only thing that is improved is the ability to add more venues to go to. There should be a weekly or daily tokens and gold coins distribution to players who are paying £12 a month!! You’re not giving much back for that money. Most people playing this don’t want to spend the game playing that mini game, they want to be playing with the ai and in the ai town you advertised. There are things that I like about it, like being able to talk to characters and customise your house but I think it doesn’t feel too immersive right now. It would be cool also that if a player builds another house, they get a second character of their own to roleplay as. And also I want the bots too be less horny and less forward.

Firstly, the game is fine- could use some work and needs some fleshing out. It’s not adapt enough to justify the cost of subscribing in my opinion. I understand development and upkeep needs to be paid for and there are some limitations to AI chatbots and of course it relies upon users also creating characters and venues.

But one gripe, is the characters constantly talking about their career prompts and relying too much on certain dialogue. Across the characters I have spoken to, they all constantly go on about their ‘egos’, for example, this is just strange. Even the characters I have created where mention of egos is not in any part of the prompts in creation, go on and on about their egos?

Additionally, new mini-games can be introduced as a way to earn coins besides the match game. Unless you do the free choice or pay, the game doesn’t really give you a way to earn coins, which is especially off-putting as you need a large amount of coins for everything, from character creation, to venue creation to decorating your house.

My biggest issue, however, is more so to do with privacy. The IRL feature, I believe should be dropped, especially as the game doesn’t actually let you know what that button does the first time you click it.

I clicked it thinking it was a screenshot button and instead I was met with my chat box being blacked out and creepy, to say the least, eyes taking a photo of me. I found that very unnerving, almost like the developers know that, that feature is unsettling.

Then, you don’t even get the chance to see the photo before it’s sent off, now there’s just a photo of me floating around in a database somewhere. This is concerning, considering that we know AI relies on the collection of data such as people’s images, information and art to create. I would rather not have this feature at all or it to be more adapted to consider user privacy. I don’t see why AI chatbots need to ‘see’ you at all, I actually would like this matter to be resolved. Even if there was a countdown before the creepy eyes took a snap of you that would be marginally better.

I also think it’s rather sneaky, that the game implies that you need to get to level 11 and 56 to unlock a multitude of features but once you actually do, you still can’t use those features until you pay for them. I personally don’t think that’s right because that’s a crucial detail.

Truly until you subscribe even at level 56 you’re still stuck with the same features making the effort not worth it.

I think some features should just be free once you reach those levels, especially because there’s really nothing else to the gameplay and it relies so much on building ‘connections’ with the AI, having these features hidden behind a paywall seems a little dishonest. For example, make being in a relationship with them free but having them move in be part of the subscription service? Increase the quality of service depending on payment, not just put everything behind payment

I think, overall the game has a strong foundation, there’s only so much that can be done with AI, which is why fleshing it out more as a game would be really beneficial. Making it a life simulator with maybe idle gameplay features, might be a good call. Where your actions in the world actually affect the way the characters respond to you, it solely being a game where you talk to chatbots endlessly leaves it bare bones and does little for the fact that there is potential in the concept. A running theme with the characters I speak to is that I run a business, which would be fun if I didn’t have to keeps reminding them of this but if there actually was features like having a job, it would be fun and force them to remember this. A way of making a basic story mode based on yours and other creations would be good too, like a level creator. Additionally if the character rejects being part of your team, coins should not be deducted! A character I asked to be part of my team, who had high skills, a 50% of succeeding rejected the team and yet my coins were still taken, what is the point of that?

Overall, I’m looking forward to seeing how this game will develop, if it ever does
