Description
Crowsflight is a GPS compass that simply points. No instructions, maps to read or paths to follow. When we ask for directions on the street, a friendly finger pointing towards the destination is often more than enough.
By combining location data (GPS) with the compass, Crowsflight provides mapless navigation in an intuitive, glance-at-it kind of way.
It uses only GPS to navigate, so once you’ve loaded your destination/s, you don’t need a data connection to navigate. Crowsflight is perfect for wandering around foreign cities.
MAIN VIEW
-Displays distance in metric or imperial units
-Drop a marker at your current position (if you have a data connection, Crowsflight will attempt to autoname your location)
-Heading pointer changes width as the compass/GPS accuracy increases or decreases
LIST VIEW
-Search for a new destination by address or placename
-Input latitude and longitude manually (e.g. open search, enter 40.692,-73.944)
-search for what3words (offline)
-Location list view shows your relative distance to each location, so you can see how places compare (distances are scaled logarithmically, so shorter distances show greater difference)
-Rearrange your location list by long-pressing the row
-Share your current location via email
-Launch Maps to get turn-by-turn directions
MAP VIEW
-Map view shows and allows you to select all your saved locations. It’s another way to see what is around you.
-Drag and drop pins in map view to pinpoint and adjust locations
-Longpress in map view to save a new location on your map. (if you have a data connection, Crowsflight will attempt to autoname your location)
OTHER FEATURES
-Works offline (searching is the only function that requires an internet connection)
-Opens custom url schemes (e.g. crowsflight://&ll=42.923580,-78.793953&q=BUFFALO). You can send Crowsflight destinations to yourself and friends via email. To get the browser bookmarklet for easy sharing, go to http://cwandt.com/#crowsflight
-Backup your locations to your computer through iTunes file sharing
-save and sync locations to iCloud
APPLE WATCH
- same pointing interface as iPhone app
- swipe to select from locations that you've add on your phone.
-pro tip: If your running app keeps taking over as frontmost app, you can double press the crown to switch back to the last app.
*Crowsflight is not meant for driving. Most cars have too much magnetic interference to show the compass reliably in the car anyways. You probably want turn by turn directions if you’re driving, but just in case you were thinking about it...we don’t recommend it.
What’s New
Version 1.8.2
-added bearing for Apple Watch.
-tap screen once to switch between bearing and distance
-long press to switch between metric and imperial
Ratings and Reviews
As below
Just downloaded- seems brilliant!
Couple of niggles
1) why isn’t it available for Apple Watch- would be a more useful platform.
2) why does interference matter ? Does that mean it uses the iPhone’s compass, rather than GPS relative positions, which would be surely bemore accurate and not prone to interference?
Essential Navigation App for Travellers
Used it for years and feeling very guilty for not reviewing before! This app lets me take an instant fix of my current location and get back there again EVEN IF I'M OFFLINE!!! Then it plots all my fixes on a Google-map like map. I can map out the important points in an unfamiliar new town quickly and clearly in a way that NO OTHER APP CAN! I'm reviewing now because I'm in Fes (Morocco); the single most confusing town on earth, having the biggest and oldest medina (ancient city of narrow walkways and markets) in the world. This app gives me simple OFFLINE method to find everywhere I need. I can even search for points on the wifi at the hotel, fix them as a memory and leave the wifi of the hotel to be guided straight there. The brilliance and simplicity of this app must make it unique and an absolute must for the international traveller. 5 Stars 99% (1% off for not keeping the non-essential map in the buffer for recalling offline, but NOT necessary for this apps navigation method). Genius app which deserves to be very famous and in Apple's 'Essentials' category.
Does one thing well
Have you ever parked your car in a large car park and wondered where it was?
Or in a theme park and wanted to mark a spot?
Or been on a hike and wanted to record a waypoint to return to?
This app lets you do this extremely simply but has 2 killer features that makes it indispensable.
1. It simply tells you how far you are from a bookmarked spot and the direction
2. It works completely off line, so in the hills, no problem, in a foreign country with no data plan or wifi, no problem
I use it hiking where mobile signal can be dodgy. Or abroad to mark our hotel, the unfamiliar shopping centres etc.
It's great for young kids as you can bookmark a spot for them to meet you if they get lost in a festival or a park, and they love navigating you back to the car / train station etc with it.
It does have a maps feature and this can be handy but, to be honest I just use the distance and direction mode
