Batteries are a big deal with this lock
So it turned out that this lock works with Premium Alkaline batteries. I tried Amazon Basics Premium batteries but they don't produce enough amp output to the lock. The lock thinks the batteries are dead after one week. When I placed the same batteries in my mouse my Mac said my Bluetooth mouse has 100% power.
Energizer Ultimate are the best so far. They last about 4-6 months. Now I'm trying ACDelco Super Alkaline. We will see what happens.
August should do an internal test on which batteries to use for their locks and post it so customers are not buying batteries that don't work well.
Clunky and not intuitive. Previous features removed
The user interface is super antiquated and clunky.
Opening the app takes you to the screen with all your homes. If you only have one home it should take you to the lock/unlock screen directly.
The screen to choose a home makes it difficult to select it since it’s all the way at the top off the screen making one-handed tapping very difficult.
As is August tradition, they’re never prepared for big iOS updates so the Lock Screen widget is broken in iOS 18. And it takes them a while to fix it.
Widget gone after iOS 18 and Battery Spec Uncommon
They used to have a widget for all door locks that I can swipe left and access. After updated to iOS 18, the widget is gone. I researched online, and found out this is a common problem across the board since the beta testing iOS 18 was out more than two months ago. In other words, August was not doing anything over this period of time to address the issue, and that disappoints the users.
The other major issue is that the new lock looks smaller, and it houses two smaller batteries instead of four AA batteries in the past. I find the smaller battery dies much faster, and is more expensive to buy, whereas the AA batteries I can find rechargeable ones. I would much rather buy the previous version bulky lock that works for longer time, and saves on battery cost.
